On October 25, 2022, Clorox issued a recall of a number of its Pine-Sol cleaners because they may contain bacteria. Original Pine-Sol is not included in the recall which affects approximately 37 million units of the products that were produced between January 2021 and September 2022. No injuries have so far been reported.

Cleaning products affected by this recall are the following:

  • Clorox Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, and Lemon Fresh scents;
  • Clorox Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaners, in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, Lemon Fresh, and Orange Energy scents; and
  • Clorox Professional Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh Cleaners

The products were sold as 28, 48, 60, 100, 144 and 175 fluid ounce units.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that these products may include bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an environmental organism found widely in soil and water.  While people with healthy immune systems are not expected to be affected by the bacteria, people with weakened immune systems and external medical devices face a risk of serious infection.

"The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin," states the CPSC.

Consumers can identify the recalled products by the name and date code on the bottom of the bottles that being with "A4" and the first five digits that are numbered less than 22249.

CPSC advises consumers to take pictures of the 12 digit UPC code and date code and contact Pine-Sol for a full refund with receipt, or for the manufacturer's suggested retail price without receipt. The products themselves should be disposed of in household trash.

Pine-sol can be contacted, toll-free at 855-378-4982 or PineSolRecalls@inmar.com, pinesolrecall.com and Pinesol.com (click "Recall information").

The recalled products were sold online and at Amazon.com, Walmart, Sam's Club, Dollar General, Target, Home Depot, BJ's, Kroger, Dollar Tree, Lowe's, Publix and other major retailers across the nation. They were priced between $2.50 to $12.50.
