Westwood School Committee Finalizes Contract with New WPS Superintendent
Westwood School Committee has announced the successful conclusion of contract negotiations with Timothy Piwowar for Mr. Piwowar to take the reins as the next superintendent of Westwood Public Schools, beginning July 1, 2023.
In School Committee's meeting of April 5th, the committee authorized Vice Chair Anthony Mullin to execute a contract with Mr. Piwowar. This start date allows Mr. Piwowar to complete the academic year in his current position as superintendent of Billerica Public Schools and for WPS Superintendent Emily Parks to likewise complete the academic year in Westwood.
In a letter to the school community dated April 6, 2023, Westwood School Committee stated, "With over 26 years of experience in education, Mr. Piwowar has served as a teacher, STEM Curriculum Coordinator, Director of Information Systems and Accountability, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, and Superintendent in the Billerica Public Schools. He has a strong track record of improving student achievement and developing innovative programs to meet the needs of diverse student populations."
The letter continued, "Mr. Piwowar is committed to building strong relationships with students, parents and staff, and he believes in creating a positive and inclusive school culture."
In a letter dated March 27, 2023 from Mr. Piwowar to the "Billerica Community," he noted that he had been selected by two school communities to be their new superintendent, and he had accepted the offer from Westwood.
Mr. Piwowar was chosen as the 2022 Massachusetts Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators National Conference on Education.
Billierica Public Schools will be undergoing a significant transition in the next academic year. Mr. Piwowar leaves the position he has held for eleven years in a district he has been employed for twenty-six years. Additionally, BPS Assistant Superintendent Jill Geiser has also recently announced her departure to become superintendent of Belmont Public Schools starting July 1, 2023. At the end of March, BPS was also in the process of conducting interviews for the position of assistant superintendent of finance and operations. Earlier in March, the Mr. Piwowar announced finalist candidates for the position of BPS director of special education.
