The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has scheduled a public hearing on the evening of September 28th to present the public with, and hear public comments on, a proposed design for the Reconstruction of Canton Street Project. The project, which proposes to create a sidewalk and shared pedestrian/bicycle path while connecting points of community interest, would require that the Town of Westwood acquire property or obtain permanent or temporary easements in order to proceed, according to MassDOT's public hearing notice.

The public hearing will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at Westwood's Downey School. In the event of cancellation for inclement weather, updates will be posted at https://www.mass.gov/orgs/highway-division/events.

The project, that extends from the East Street Rotary to the intersection of University Avenue, proposes to:

  • Include traffic calming measures
  • Construct a sidewalk on the west side of Canton Street with "high visibility crossing opportunities"
  • Construct a 1.9 mile shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists on the east side of the road
  • Provide connections to the Downey School, the Route 128 MBTA/Amtrak station, retail and restaurants and the Currier Reservation conservation area
  • Include a new stormwater system
  • Relocate overhead utilities
  • Replace water main(s)
  • Secure a right-of-way through property acquisition or temporary or permanent easements

Questions, written statements, and exhibits can be submitted to Carrie E. Lavallee, P.E., Chief Engineer, via email at MassDOTProjectManagement@dot.state.ma.us. They can also be mailed to Suite 7550, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, ATTN: Project Management, Project File No. 608158.
