The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) will join several other animal welfare organizations in Massachusetts for a fee-waived guinea pig adoption event this coming weekend to collectively find homes for over 100 guinea pigs.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA), Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts(ASPCM), Dakin Humane Society, and Lowell Humane Society will all be taking part in the fee-waived adoption event which will run from Friday, January 5 to Sunday, January 7.

All adoption fees for guinea pigs will be waived during this weekend-long event.

Guinea pig populations at animal shelters throughout the Commonwealth have increased drastically in the past couple of years, and this upcoming event is timely on the number of fronts. Just last week ARL had an intake of 55 guinea pigs from a home, 20 of which were graciously taken in by MSPCA. The guinea pigs were very well cared for, but the owners purchased the animals from pet stores where they were incorrectly sexed, resulting in many litters.

The City of Boston also recently passed a ban on the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores, unless those stores partner with a rescue organization. With many pet stores acquiring guinea pigs from out-of-state breeding facilities, the ban will help promote the large numbers of guinea pigs available for adoption in surrounding animal shelters and cut down on the rising numbers of abandoned and stray guinea pigs being found in the city.
