Westwood Resident Pleads Guilty to Paying Employees “Under the Table”
A Westwood resident has pled guilty in federal district court on Tuesday, September 8, to paying employees in cash “under the table,” without withholding or paying federal employment taxes, announced the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
According to the office, Marios Michalakis, the 44-year-old operator of Sofia Italian Steakhouse in West Roxbury and Amelia’s restaurant in Stoughton, pleaded guilty to six counts of failing to collect, report and pay federal employment taxes. The U.S. Attorney’s Office states that Mr. Michalakis failed to pay more than $580,000 in employee and employer taxes to the Internal Revenue Service and Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
Sentencing for Mr. Michalakis is scheduled for December 8, 2026. He faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater, as well as restitution.
