DWWD Completes Winter Street Main Break Repairs in 4 Hours

At 9:15 p.m. on Monday, December 13, 2021, Dedham-Westwood Water District was nearing the end of its work related to repairing a water main that broke underground, across the residence at 22 Winter Street, just past the Winter and Clapboardtree streets intersection. 

Although the break had been thought to have the potential to affect 90 customers on Winter Street and five surrounding streets, a DWWD employee involved in repairs at the scene spoke with Westwood Minute and described a limited area of Winter Street being affected, which appears to cover around 10 homes.

The DWWD employee, who did not want his name or image recorded, told Westwood Minute that another DWWD employee was the first to report water bubbling up from the ground on Winter Street, across from the residence at 22 Winter Street, around 3:30 p.m. on the same day. He said the water leakage was due to a crack in the underground main. 

The man who spoke to Westwood Minute said that DWWD workers were on the scene for repairs by around 4:30 p.m. and the main was repaired around four hours later, by 8:30 p.m. 

When Westwood Minute arrived at the scene around 8:40 p.m., workers were just preparing to dump a truckload of fill to cover the hole containing the repaired main.

The DWWD employee said that two to three blocks of homes extending farther south on Winter Street, beginning from where Winter and Clapboardtree streets meet, were affected by interruption in service.  He said that no surrounding streets or neighborhoods were affected.  

At 8:45 p.m., Winter Street appeared dry, and the patch of land on the west side of the street, was spongy and muddy, but not wet.
