Incumbent JoAnna French Seeks Three More Years on Westwood’s School Committee

WESTWOOD, MA — JoAnna French, a current member of the Westwood School Committee, seeks re‑election to another three‑year term, citing a deep commitment to academic excellence, transparent governance, and long‑term planning for the town’s schools.

French has served on Westwood’s School Committee during a period of significant change and opportunity for the district. During her tenure, the committee welcomed a new Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, opened the new Pine Hill Elementary School, and restored student travel opportunities. French also represented the district last year during contract negotiations with the Westwood Teachers Association and settled a fair and fiscally responsible contract with our teachers—without disruption.

A major focus of French’s work has been long‑range capital planning and community engagement. During her tenure, the Committee launched a transparent, community‑driven capital planning process and identified Thurston Middle School as a priority project for state funding consideration. Working closely with families, town and district leadership, and residents will ensure that the most educationally appropriate and cost-effective solution is considered for Westwood school buildings.

Looking ahead, French emphasized that Westwood is at a pivotal moment. Westwood is implementing a multi‑year strategic plan, addressing complex special education challenges, and aligning resources with the evolving needs of students and families. If re-elected, she’ll focus on strengthening academic excellence, planning responsibly for Westwood’s facilities, and ensuring graduates are ready for their next phase, whether in college, the armed services, or a career.

There are two races on the ballot. In the first, Katie Willette is running unopposed to fill the two remaining years of Dori Parmelee's current term. The second race is competitive. Three candidates, including incumbent JoAnna French, are running for two of the three available three‑year seats. Voters may select up to two candidates.

French encourages residents to contact her. “The most important part of serving on the School Committee is listening. I want to hear about the challenges families are facing, understand different perspectives, and learn what excites residents about the future of Westwood.”

Election Day is April 28 at Westwood High School. Early voting is April 16, 17, and 18 at the Westwood Police Station.
