Former Ambassador to Russia and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, John J. Sullivan, to Speak at Xaverian

Westwood, MA - On Tuesday, October 24th, Xaverian Brothers High School (Xaverian) students will lead a panel discussion at Xaverian with Ambassador John J. Sullivan, a 1977 graduate of the school whose long career of public service includes working in both Republican and Democrat administrations and holding the positions of U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and U.S. Ambassador to Russia.

The event will be at 6:00 p.m., is open to the pubic, and is free of charge. Pre-registration is required.

Ambassador Sullivan served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State from May 2017 to December 2019. He served as the United States Ambassador to Russia from February 2020 to September 2022. Currently, he is a partner at Mayer Brown, co-leading the law firm’s National Security practice. He is also a contributor on CBS News and is regularly consulted for his expertise and opinion by media outlets throughout the world.

After graduating from Xaverian, Ambassador Sullivan went on to study as an undergraduate at Brown University. He earned his juris doctor degree at Columbia Law School where he served on the Columbia Law Review. He then clerked for Supreme Court Justice David Souter.

 Ambassador Sullivan then embarked on a long career of public service that included working for both Republican and Democrat administrations. During the presidencies of George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, he worked in the Department of Justice, served as Deputy General Counsel in the Department of Defense, and as Deputy Secretary of Commerce. Under President Barack Obama, he served as chair of an advisory committee on U.S. relations with Iraq. He was Ambassador to Russia during the administrations of Donald Trump and Joseph Biden.

 Ambassador Sullivan is the recipient of the Secretary of Defense’s Medal for Exceptional Public Service. He has also been honored with the Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award.
