MassDOT Grants for Local Road Projects: Route 109 in Dover & Shared Streets/Spaces in Needham, Dedham
The Town of Dover has announced on Thursday, August 8th, that it has received a Municipal Pavement Program Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) in the amount of $217,261 to preserve and improve pavement on Route 109.
The section of road affected will be Route 109 from the Medfield town line to the Walpole town line. The road work will be coordinated with additional work on Route 109 in Walpole.
The grant will be used for micro surfacing the road. Micro surfacing is a technique to extend pavement life, provide skid resistance, restrict moisture intrusion, and restore a uniform black appearance to the road.
Additionally, work will include patching and crack sealing prior to micro surfacing, adjusting drainage and utility structures in the road, filling low shoulders, stabilizing the roadway edge and repairing driveways.
"This grant funding allows our town to continue to invest in our infrastructure and demonstrate our dedication to ensuring safe and efficient travel for our community," said Town of Dover Director of Public Works Kevin McCabe.
Each fiscal year, MassDOT selects roadway segments for improvement based on condition data, the proportion of state numbered routes in poor condition in a municipality, and geographic equity.
Also announced earlier this week were $6.5 million in MassDOT Shared Streets and Spaces Program grants to municipalities throughout the state, in which funding is provided to cities and towns to design and implement changes to curbs, streets, and parking areas for public health, safe mobility and community growth and revitalization.
In Dedham, $248,128.86 will be directed to constructing ADA accessible sidewalks and paths, protective curbing, bicycle racks, a water bottle filling station, and bus stop improvements for the Town Green project of creating outdoor programming space for gatherings, events, and passive recreation.
In Needham, among other things, a grant of $249,982.29 will be used to construct a new bicycle lane, lane diet, high-visibility crosswalks, and a pedestrian refuge island on Warren Street. Funding will also be directed to signage along Dedham Avenue, from Lincoln Street to DeFazio Park beyond the rail bridge.
