Westwood High School Senior Isaac Y. Chan has been announced as one of eighteen Massachusetts students who have been awarded college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships, as part of the final group of 2025 Merit Scholarship winners announced  on July 14th by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Chan's award is sponsored by Tufts University and is one of 3,700 college-sponsored Merit Scholarships awarded nationwide this year. Overall, there have been 7,100 Merit Scholarships awarded this year that are sponsored not only by colleges, but also corporations, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Officials from sponsor colleges select their scholarship winners from the pool of Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who have indicated plans to attend their institution. College-sponsored awards are in amounts ranging from $500 to $2,000 each year for up to four years of undergraduate study at the campus.

Along with Chan, local winners are:

  • Isaac Y. Chan, Westwood High School - sponsored by Tufts University
  • Beckett A. Coffman, Brookline High School - sponsored by Northeastern University
  • Riley Lakhi Ashok, Medway High School - sponsored by Northeastern University
  • Liliana Fernandes, Natick High School - sponsored by Boston University
  • Maxim S. Malkevich, Newton North High School - sponsored by Northeastern University

To become eligible for a Merit Scholarship, students must be among the less than one percent of the nation's high school seniors who have the highest scores in their state on the PSAT/NMSQT test. Additionally, they must submit an application outlining their leadership and community contributions, outstanding academics, and a high school official's endorsement. Of these applicants, half are chosen by a sponsor to receive a National Merit Scholarship.
