Police Log: Gucci Sneakers Stolen, Store Fight, Late-Night Doorbell

The news described in this installment of Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log and information provided by Sergeant Christopher Elcock and police staff to Westwood Minute through written records and conversations. Monday, September 14
Resident Suspects Possible Attempted Break-In
8:36 a.m. A Westwood resident contacted police regarding a possible attempted break-in at a home on Lake Shore Drive. A half-inch cut was discovered in a window screen. Police examined the cut but observed no other evidence of an attempted break-in.
Sunday, September 13
Designer Shoes Stolen from Locker Room
4:04 p.m. A resident of Brockton reported that his Gucci sneakers had been stolen from the men’s locker room at Life Time fitness center the previous evening. He had left the shoes there while he worked out elsewhere in the gym for about 30 minutes. The shoes are valued at $650.
Suspicious Activity on Sandy Valley Road
6:56 p.m. A resident of Sandy Valley Road reported suspicious activity after seeing vehicles pull into a driveway at high speed and then “flee.” Police checked the area and found nothing amiss.
Saturday, September 12
Doorbell Rings at 1:50 a.m.
1:50 a.m. A resident of Pleasant Valley Drive reported hearing her doorbell ring twice but seeing no one on her Ring doorbell camera. Police responded to the area and found nothing amiss.
Woman in Distress
2:17 a.m. A caller reported hearing a woman screaming in the area of Westview Terrace. Police investigated and learned that the woman was reacting to news that her father had died.
No Crime Associated with Suspicious Van
8:46 a.m. Staff at Fox Hill Village on Longwood Drive reported that a van with Connecticut license plates had been parked on the grass in front of the residential community since the previous day. The same van had been observed in the area and noted by police at 12:21 a.m. that morning. Following the call from Fox Hill Village, police investigated the white, Kia Carnival. Police found no evidence of any criminal activity.
Police Secure Bus Window, Door
7:40 a.m. Police responded to a caller's report that Bus 34, that was parked at Westwood High School on Nahatan Street, had a window and door left open. Police located the bus and secured it.
Friday, September 11
Police Dispose of Unwanted Ammunition
9:53 a.m. A resident of Burgess Avenue turned over to police unused ammunition consisting of 9mm and .380-caliber rounds. The ammunition belonged to her ex-husband, and she requested that police assist with safe disposal.
Delivery Truck Damages Rock Wall and Mailbox
12:49 p.m. A resident of Russell Avenue reported that a FedEx delivery truck, apparently driven by a subcontractor, had struck his rock wall and mailbox sometime during the previous week. The mailbox was attached to the rock wall. The resident told police that he expected the damage would be covered but he had not heard back from the transportation service company.
Thursday, September 10
Disorderly Passenger Escorted Off Train
5:43 p.m. Westwood Police responded to a request for assistance from MBTA Police, who reported a disorderly male passenger on an incoming train on Track 2. The passenger did not present his fare when requested and refused to exit the train. Westwood Police arrived at Route 128 Station on University Avenue and escorted him off the train.
Wednesday, September 9
Drone Reported Hovering over Residence
2:23 p.m. A resident of Oak Street reported a disturbance, telling police that drones were hovering over her home and requesting that they stop. Police investigated and learned that the drone operator had been hired by the Town of Westwood to conduct a land survey.
Individuals Uncooperative with Police Investigation into Store Fight
2:42 p.m. Police responded to a request for assistance from Lambert’s Fruit market on Providence Highway where employees reported a fight inside the store. Upon arrival, police encountered three individuals standing beside a blue sedan, outside the market. They were identified as having been involved in the altercation but were described as uncooperative with the police investigation.
Another individual was found inside the store with scratches on his face and arms and a possible shoulder injury. Westwood Fire paramedics arrived to evaluate him, but he declined medical assistance and was similarly uncooperative with the police investigation.
The four individuals involved were believed to be in their early 20s. The injured man, a resident of Brockton, left in his vehicle. The other three – residents of Rockland, Boston, and Norfolk - left together in a different vehicle.
Tuesday, September 8
Lights On, Doors Open at Abandoned House
8:44 p.m. A Westwood resident reported suspicious activity at a neighboring home. The resident told police that the home had been abandoned for over a decade, but its doors had been found open and its lights had been turned on. The resident reported closing the doors and turning off the lights. Police investigated and found nothing suspicious.
Wednesday, September 2
SUV Reportedly Accelerates, then Crashes into Parked Car
12:20 p.m. Police responded to a two-vehicle crash in the Wegmans supermarket parking lot on University Avenue. A 75-year-old Canton resident was driving a Toyota RAV4 when the vehicle reportedly accelerated over a curb and crashed into a parked, unoccupied 2008 Honda. The driver was transported to the hospital to be evaluated for injuries. The crash appeared to have been an accident. Both cars required towing.
Juveniles Reportedly Seen inside Building after Business Hours
4:51 p.m. Police received a report from a town staff member that three juveniles, believed to be middle-school students, were running around inside the former Deerfield School building, which now houses other town and business operations, after the building had closed and been secured for the evening. Police responded but did not find anyone inside the building.
Monday, August 31
Shoplifting Suspect Observed Concealing Items at Self-Checkout
4:07 p.m. Asset protection staff at the Target store in Westwood called police after they reportedly observed a female concealing items at the self-checkout. She was observed paying for one item, but failing to pay for the concealed items. The suspect was detained, and merchandise valued at over $120 was recovered. The Roxbury resident, who is in her 30s, was trespassed from the store for one year and will be summoned on a shoplifting charge.
