Following Tuesday’s November 3 state election, Westwood Minute has compiled a comparison of the unofficial voting results in Westwood with how Massachusetts residents voted on a statewide basis. Westwood voters appear to have closely tracked the voting trend of the statewide vote on all nine statewide ballot measures.

Unofficial results show that the majority of Westwood residents favored the same side as voters statewide on ballot measures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9:

1 – Expanding public records law: YES

2 – Allowing collective bargaining for Committee for Public Counsel Services employees: YES

3- Allowing candidates from all-parties to compete in a single primary: NO

4 – Allowing Election Day voter registration: YES

5- Changing state tax revenue methodology for taxpayer refunds: NO

6 – Establishing Nature For All Conservation Fund: YES

8- Prohibiting retail sales of recreational marijuana: NO

9- Upholding state’s existing firearms regulations: YES

As of the afternoon of Wednesday, November 4, two statewide ballot measures – Question 5 (changing calculation of refunds to taxpayers) and Question 7 (reducing minimum lot sizes for single-family houses) had not yet been called by the Associated Press, according to reporting by GBH. However, GBH reports that the “Yes of 5” campaign has conceded defeat.

In Westwood, the voting on Question 7 (minimum lot size) was not as close as the statewide vote, with a clear majority rejecting the proposal. It was Question 5 (changing calculation of taxpayer refunds) that almost evenly divided Westwood voters, where “No” votes outnumbered “Yes” votes by 69.

Westwood’s vote in favor of retaining the firearms laws presented in Question 9 was almost 9 percentage points higher than the statewide vote.

The majority of Westwood voters agreed with the statewide sentiment to reject additional restrictions to sales of recreational marijuana. However, Westwood’s support of the losing side (greater restrictions) was 6 percentage points stronger than the statewide vote.
