Canton's police and animal control departments  are seeking the public's help in identifying an individual who, on Tuesday morning, November 3, allegedly pushed a dog out of a vehicle and drove away, appearing to abandon the dog in a residential neighborhood in Canton

Canton Police Department says at about 9:14 a.m. on Tuesday, Canton Animal Control Officer (ACO) Stacy Benton responded to a residence on Trayer Road where someone had allegedly abandoned a dog on a resident's front lawn before appearing to flee.

Police say witnesses reported that a silver Toyota RAV4, believed to be a model year between 2019 and 2025, stopped in front of the Trayer Road residence, and a middle-aged woman who appaered to be white or Hispanic allegedly threw a dog toy onto the lawn, pushed the dog out of the vehicle, and quickly drove away.

The dog is believed to be a Cairn Terrier or Cairn Terrier mix. Police say it appeared dirty but showed no obvious signs of injury or distress. ACO Benton recovered the dog, along with a blue-and-orange Nerf dog ball.

Staff at the Canton Animal Control shelter found an unregistered microchip in the dog. Police say shelter staff are working with a North Shore veterinary clinic  to trace the dog's ownership through historical veterinary records.

The Canton Police Department is asking residents in the Trayer Road neighborhood to review any home surveillance or doorbell camera footage from the morning of November 3. They are asked to look for footage that may show a silver Toyota RAV4 or any activity that may be connected to the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, recognizes the dog, or has information regarding the vehicle or individual involved is askedto contact the Canton Animal Control Department at 781-575-6507 or the Canton Police Department at 781-821-5090.
