Thanks to Eastern Massachusetts Senior Softball for sharing its news with Westwood Minute.
Eastern Massachusetts Senior Softball (EMASS) has opened its annual registration for slow-pitch softball players aged 50 and over. With over 400 members, the league attracts players from towns across eastern Massachusetts. Games are played on fields in Wayland, Medfield, and Framingham.
“EMASS Senior Softball was a welcome outdoor escape from the lifestyle disruptions of the COVID pandemic over the last two years. We had seventy new players last year and with more seniors looking for a healthy outlet, we feel confident we will see similar growth in 2022,” said Commissioner of EMASS Walker Royce.
EMASS members range from 50 to 90 years of age. EMASS notes that it has many players in their 50s and 60s who can still hit a ball over the 300 foot fences or run down a deep line drive in the outfield. Many members play on more than one team, in multiple divisions. Player skill levels range from casual recreational players to members of nationally competitive tournament teams.
The EMASS season begins in early May, with regular season games spanning eighteen weeks, scheduled through Labor Day. Playoffs are completed in early October.
Over forty teams compete in six divisions. There are two Saturday divisions and four weekday divisions. Each division plays a double-header every week.
EMASS notes that is members cherish playing weekly double-headers with their softball-loving buddies and that watching players still playing ball into their late 70s and 80s can be inspirational. EMASS states that the three-hour escape is a high point of each week, characterized by camaraderie, teamwork and healthy outdoor competition.
Information about EMASS and registering for the league can be found at e-mass.org. Registration for returning players runs until March 15, 2022, after which there is a late fee. Registration for new players runs until April 15, 2022.
On April 17, 2022, the EMASS website indicated that late registration is still available for two leagues that play in Medfield and Wayland.
