Xaverian Takes 2nd, Westwood Takes 5th, Both Break Records at South Sectional Boys Swim Meet

At the South Sectional Boys Swim and Diving Championship held at the Beverly YMCA on Sunday afternoon, February 12, 2023, the Xaverian Brothers Hawks were runners up to repeat champions Needham High School Rockets, and the  Westwood High School Wolverines placed fifth, with both Westwood-based Hawks and Wolverines breaking a slew of meet and school records.

Xaverian senior Tommy Hagar set a meet record in the 100-yard backstroke at 48.66 seconds, qualifying him for All-American consideration, and followed that performance by setting a meet record in the 100-yard butterfly at 48,80 seconds, tweeted Boston Herald Sportswriter Brendan Connelly. 

Mr. Connelly also reported that the Xaverian team of Tommy Hagar, Pierce Brausch, Aidan Wolcott and William Mulgrew set a meet record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36:34.

Westwood, by placing fifth, had its best showing in two decades, which included breaking three Westwood High School records, tweeted Westwood Athletics.

The new Westwood High School record holders are Alek Kangas in the 100-yard freestyle, Declan MacDonald in the 200-yard freestyle, and the team of Jason Guo, Brendon Watson, Alek Kangas, and Declan MacDonald in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.25. 

The record breaking Westwood relay team placed second behind Needham, which finished at 1:29.86, and ahead of Xaverian which came in third in that event at 1:33.40.
