Needham, Mass. — Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham (BID Needham) last week announced a $20 million gift from grateful patient Valerie Trotman and family, constituting the largest donation in the history of the hospital.

The gift will be used to establish the Trotman Family Campus Transformation Fund, and will serve as the catalyst for a $40 million, multi-year philanthropic campaign to support BID Needham’s vision for the future.

John Fogarty, president of BID Needham, expressed the hospital's gratitude and described the gift as both historic and transformational. “Philanthropy gives the hospital the space to innovate and to dream; now is the time for communities to invest in their local hospital," he said.

“The growth of BID Needham over the last decade has been remarkable,” said Valerie Trotman. “I believe this success is a testament to the strength of its leadership – John Fogarty, Samantha Sherman, and others – who are deeply committed to making more types of clinical care and medical services available close to home. What keeps me connected is the hospital’s inspiring vision for the future, building on its past achievements, and I want to be part of that journey. It brings me great joy to support BID Needham and help turn this vision into a reality. My hope is that others will join me.”

With the foundation of this gift, BID Needham has launched a “Transforming Health Care Here” comprehensive campaign, with a goal of raising $40 million to support its stated mission of providing extraordinary care in the community.

“A gift of this magnitude is a rarity for a community hospital," said Samantha Sherman, Divisional Vice President, Community Hospitals for Beth Israel Lahey Health, while remarking on Ms. Trotman's "unparallelled" commitment to the hospital in ensuring the availability of care to the community.

“This is philanthropy at its best – combining strategic thinking, strong leadership, and meaningful investment to transform lives. Thanks to Val’s visionary support, we have an opportunity to reshape health care right here. We have the roadmap for growth, and with additional philanthropic support we can ensure that BID Needham meets the needs of our patients today, tomorrow, and for decades to come," said Ms. Sherman.

Past support from the Trotman family has allowed the hospital to expand its Intensive Care Unit, increase  behavioral health services, and build the Lank Cancer Center and the Surgical Pavilion.
