Westwood 13U Baseball Wins Metro South Babe Ruth Championship

The Westwood 13U baseball team captured the Metro South Babe Ruth championship on Thursday, August 6, defeating Hanover 10-2 to cap a grueling 13-game summer schedule.
“Beating Hanover for the championship was especially meaningful because they had beaten us twice in the regular season in competitive games, back and forth games,” Coach David Mullin said. “It was fun seeing the team come together down the stretch to close out the regular season on a four-game winning streak, followed by beating Needham in the semifinals and a strong Hanover team in the championship game.”
Playing in a competitive division, Westwood also squared off against tough opponents from Braintree, Quincy, Needham, and Parkway.
Despite balancing summer camps, vacations, and other obligations, Westwood’s 13U players stepped up to master entirely new positions.
"Offensively, the lineup proved exceptionally balanced, with both seasoned veterans and summer league newcomers delivering in clutch situations," said Sean Smith, one of the team’s coaches.
The coaches said they were impressed with the growth and contributions of each player during the team’s first summer on Babe Ruth’s full-size diamond after making the transition from Little League.
“At the beginning of our season, the kids set a goal to make the playoffs. They made the playoffs by getting hot toward the end of the season, by doing the little things that make teams successful,” Coach Rene Gauthier III said. “I was proud of their effort.”
Gary Cappuccino, president of Westwood Babe Ruth, emphasized the value of playing summer ball. “Summer travel baseball is an important developmental step in these players’ baseball careers. Each game means something and winning the championship is never guaranteed but has to be earned,” he said.
“This team stayed together as a unit and worked hard in each game at limiting mistakes. In the playoffs, they played each game that way, and it resulted in a championship," said Coach Cappuccino. "Well done, boys and coaches.”
