Great Blue Hill, Canton
There are few better ways to experience the Blue Hills than from the summit of Great Blue Hill at sunset during the fall foliage season. From 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friends of the Blue Hills invite the community to hike (or take a ski lift for a fee) to the summit, enjoy a picnic with a view, and listen to live music at its annual Sunset Hike & Hilltop Concert. All attendees should be prepared to hike back down.
Once at the top, guests can settle in with a BYO picnic and enjoy live music from Retro Rockets, a local classic rock and oldies cover band with a festive vibe. Free parking is available at the Blue Hills Ski Area near the Trailside Museum. Tickets are $5 for FBH members and $10 for nonmembers, or new members can join FBH for $30 and get free admission. Newton muralist Gregg Bernstein will paint a mural on plywood panels, incorporating Charles River nature scenes. Visit one or both days, between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to watch public art being created, live! Visitors can observe and ask questions while learning about the role of public art and what it takes to create a large-scale mural. The F.A. Day Middle School Jazz Band will make a special appearance with Gregg on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. [more details]
