Westwood High School and Xaverian Brothers High School basketball teams are tournament champions following the final game of the Riley Winter Classic on February 20th, with Westwood High School Girls defeating Canton 49-18, while Xaverian beat Westwood High School Boys in a close game, 36-31.
While Xaverian successfully defended its standing as Riley Winter Classic champion with back-to-back wins this year and last, the win by Westwood Girls Basketball marks the first time it has won this tournament since 2016.
The two- day tournament is held each year on Presidents' Day Weekend to honor Westwood Girls Basketball Coach Bill Riley, who from 1990 to 2008 compiled a 357-62 record that included several Tri-Valley League titles.
These are great strides in addressing concerns about a lack of openness and two way dialogue raised by Westwood citizens. Thanks to the Select Board and to Mr. Read for listening and acting.
Thank you Ms. Galkowski for this thoughtful acknowledgement of positive steps being made by our Town government. My generation loves the positive empowerment. Exemplary.
In promulgating the public comment policy, the Select Board has taken a big step towards showing willingness to engage in conversation with Westwood residents about the many important issues at hand—currently, the Fire Station 1 and the budget.
