QUINCY – Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott has announced that the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is partnering with the Free Jacks Rugby Club, located in Quincy, to promote “Heroes Among Us,” a celebration of first responders, on Sunday, April 3oth, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy.

The “Heroes Among Us” event will be an all-day celebration, starting with a Free Jacks Flag Frenzy Junior non-contact rugby tournament at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Touch-A-Truck zone from noon to 3:00 p.m. where families can interact with and tour emergency vehicles provided by the Quincy Police Department, Quincy Fire Department, and Brewster Ambulance.

Additionally, there will be a live music performance by country singer Alexandra Kay and a chowder tasting competition. The festivities will culminate in a rugby match between the Free Jacks and the Rugby New York “Ironworkers” at 3:00 p.m.

“Research shows that first responders are much more prone to burnout and exhaustion than many other professions, and that burnout only accelerated during the pandemic. This event is one way that we can try to help the people who work so hard to make sure that we are able to enjoy our lives have a little respite and enjoyment of their own,” Sheriff McDermott said.

The NCSO is also partnering with the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and the Norfolk County Central Labor Council to host a food and diaper drive at the event. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and diapers to help stock local food pantries and help Norfolk County families in need.
