From now through Saturday, August 26, adoption fees are waived for dogs 1-year and older at the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL's) five-day Dog Adopt-a-thon, currently being held at ARL's Dedham, Boston, and Brewster locations, removing a financial barrier or hesistation to adopt for some households that can otherwise provide an adoptable dog with a good home.
The waiver of adoption fees represents a savings of hundreds of dollars for prospective adopters. The typical ARL fees outside of the adoption event are $450 for dogs aged 1 to 9 years of age and $300 for dogs aged 10 years and over. Savings could be redirected to other items - a first visit to the vet, food, toys, or a crate, for example.
Interested adopters can meet ARL's adoptable dogs online first, or skip the online look and just head out to an ARL location for an in-person meeting. However, note that some dogs are in foster homes and an appointment may be needed to meet them. All three of ARL's Animal Care & Adoption Centers are open daily through Saturday this week, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day. Locations are as follows:

They may end up spending more time in a shelter environment instead of the home they deserve. But young adult dogs can still exhibit the energy and playfulness of a puppy. Additionally, unlike their puppy counterparts, young adult dogs are often potty trained and have already learned basic manners and skills.

Adoptions are first come first serve, as ARL is unable to place holds on any dogs during this event. ARL’s Adoption Forward, a conversation-based adoption matching process, will remain the same during this event. Potential adopters who already have another dog at home are advised to bring their dog with them to meet any dog who they are interested in adopting.
ARL is a non-profit organization founded in 1899 which provides veterinary care, adoption, and rescue services.
