The annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 5:00. The contest will be held at Dedham High School in the back gymnasium. All boys and girls ages 9-14 are welcome to compete.

Participants will shoot 15 consecutive free throws. The winners of each age bracket will move on to regional competitions with the chance to advance to state, national, and international competitions. Every participant will receive a certificate suitable for framing.

Founded in 1882, the Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service order. Dedicated to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism, the Knights donated more than $185 million and gave 49 million hours of volunteer service last year alone.

The Dedham Council has been active since 1897 and includes many members from Westwood and other towns. Each year, the Council gives away tens of thousands of dollars to worthy causes around the community and can frequently be seen in the community.

In addition to the Free Throw Championship, Knights volunteer their time each year at Dedham Day running the Soccer Challenge for youth. They help senior and disabled residents with the upkeep of their homes, feed hot meals to those in need, and spend Saturday mornings helping out at the Food Pantry. Once a month, Knights serve coffee and donuts after the 9:00 mass at St. Mary's.

There are several subgroups within the council as well. An investment club for members meets monthly and regularly sees returns that beat the market. The Saturday Knights Club puts on social events each month for knights, their wives, and friends. Other social events include an annual spring dance, periodic fraternal nights, and trips to local and national sporting events.
