Police Log: Pregnant Shoplifter Steals Fragrances and Other Stories

The news described in Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may weave a few facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.

Sunday, August 4th

Aiding Worried Parents' Post-Concert Connection with Daughter

1:56 a.m. Two residents of Lancaster Drive called police after they lost contact with their daughter following a concert. Westwood Police located the daughter by her cell phone location, which showed the phone to be in another part of Westwood. Police found her safe at a friend’s home, planning to spend the night.

Friday August 2nd

Pregnant Shoplifting Suspect Steals Fragrances

12:38 p.m. Police met with loss prevention staff at Nordstrom Rack on University Avenue to take a report of shoplifting that occurred the previous evening. Staff informed police that a pregnant appearing female, described as 5’5” tall and weighing about 130 lb., was seen removing $239 of perfume from the store and leaving in an unknown direction.

Suspicious Activity at Car Dealership

4:00 a.m. Security for Prime Porsche Westwood on Providence Highway informed police that a male in his 20s had arrived at the property in a black tow truck and parked next to a white sedan on the lot. The party reportedly got into the white sedan which he was examining. He then returned to the tow truck drive around the parking lot, with lights off. The suspicious vehicle and male were no longer at the scene when police arrived.

Thursday, August 1st

Half-hearted Vandalism

2:52 p.m. A resident of Gables University Station apartments on University Avenue showed police a 2 foot long scratch on the passenger side of the door. However, police determined that what appeared to be a scratch did not penetrate the paint and could be rubbed off. It did not appear to be made by a key.

Wednesday, July 31st

One Thing Leads to Another

12:21 a.m. An officer conducting stationary traffic enforcement observed a grey, Toyota Rav4 that appeared to be speeding and radar showed the vehicle to be traveling at over 60 m.p.h. in a 50 m.p.h. zone. The officer made the traffic stop and discovered the driver had a suspended license. The officer cited the driver, a woman from Brockton, for operating a motor vehicle after having her license suspended and speeding.

Multiple Reports of Vehicles Stolen or Break-Ins

6:10 a.m. Dover Police alerted Westwood Police that a stolen vehicle belonging to a Westwood resident of Orchard Circle was recovered in Dover. The Westwood resident provided police with video from a Ring doorbell camera, timestamped at around 3:00 a.m., showing two men opening the unlocked door of the Rav4 that was later stolen. Police also obtained video showing four males inside a white four-door sedan, driving up and down the street, before they exited the car.

Following Dover Police’s alert, Westwood Police received numerous additional reports of vehicle break-ins in Westwood, including a report of a second stolen car. A 2017 Mercedes E300 sedan was stolen from a residence on Rock Meadow Road.

Driver Injured When Vehicle Crosses Center Line

4:21 p.m. A woman from Hyde Park was headed east on Gay Street in her Toyota, when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck a Chevy, driven by a man from Randolph, in the westbound lane. The woman’s Toyota struck the Chevy in the area behind the driver’s seat. The woman was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. The other driver did not need medical attention. Both vehicles were towed. Police determined that the injured woman was responsible for the crash.

Tuesday, July 30th

Advised to Make a Correction

7:48 p.m. An officer observed a black, Volkswagen rabbit passing south on Washington Street and discovered that is registration was revoked and that the vehicle lacked insurance since mid-June. The officer conducted a traffic stop. The driver was able to provide proof of active insurance. The officer advised the driver to contact the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to correct the vehicle information. The vehicle was towed for being unregistered and the driver was issued a warning.

Monday, July 29th

Parking Lot Hit-and-Run

1:58 p.m. A resident of Dighton, Massachusetts reported finding scrapes on the entire right side of his 2019 Ford that was parked outside the Westwood Target store on University Avenue. The scrapes appeared to be caused by another vehicle that sideswiped the Ford. Police are considering the incident hit-and-run.

Warning: Don't Travel in the Breakdown Lane

4:29 p.m. to 5:25 p.m. Police gave written warnings to numerous motorists traveling on and around Providence Highway in the vehicle breakdown lane. That lane is reserved for vehicle breakdowns.

Thursday, August 28th

Mediating between Resident and Surveyor

11:34 a.m. An employee of a surveyor company contacted police regarding the lack of cooperation of a resident on Burgess Avenue. Police mediated a resolution where a plan would be worked out with Town Hall regarding the work to be done for the surveyor’s project.
