Quincy/Dedham, MA – Sheriff Patrick W. McDermott is celebrating another successful donation drive by the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office to gather winter coats for families in need, after collecting dozens of children’s and adult sized coats donated by people across the county.
“Over the past several weeks, our office collected 133 brand new or gently used children’s and adult coats through a partnership with Coats for Kids and Families,” said Sheriff McDermott.
The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office accepted the donations at its correctional center in Dedham and its Civil Process Office in Quincy from October 11th through Friday, November 8th.
“This simple act of kindness is sure to warm someone’s day and we are grateful for everyone’s thoughtfulness,” said Sheriff McDermott.
Recruits from the sheriff’s office helped sort the donations at the Braintree Public Safety Complex before they were delivered to Anton’s Cleaners.
The coats will be professionally cleaned by Anton’s Cleaners and given to local nonprofits, social service agencies, and schools for distribution in Norfolk County and beyond.
According to the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office, Coats for Kids and Families has collected, cleaned, and distributed 1,810,839 free coats at more than 70 collection locations and events since the program began in 1995.

This is progress and I am glad to see the Select Board moving in the right direction. However, a majority of voters at last Monday's Special Town Meeting voted to recommend that the Select Board immediately cease its lawsuit against the Westwood Land Trust.
What is the citizen's petition about? I checked the town website, and the only information I could find on town meeting articles was from last year. The public hearing dates for 2026 are posted as February 24-25.
Apparently, you need to submit a public records request through the town's FOIA portal. What a shame, since it should have been posted to the town website upon certification of petition signatures.
Westwood Minute has obtained a copy of the petition and has added a short description of it to the article. A copy of the petition is attached below the article.
