When a popular private preschool in town, Mother’s Morning Out (MMO) closed in 2019, Westwood parents’ options for early childhood learning programs suddenly became more limited, but those options could enlarge this fall if the openings of two new preschools in town go according to plan.
A banner has been erected outside Temple Beth David at 7 Clapboardtree Street, announcing the coming of the Shalom Corner Early Learning Center. Temple Beth David’s website announces a planned opening in September 2021, pending licensure. It describes a classroom for 2 to 3 year olds and a second classroom for 3 to 5 year olds, with hopes to open “a separate pre-K classroom by year two.” Programs are described as running 5 days, 3 days and 2 days per week with a morning program from 8 am. to 1 p.m. and a full day program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Temple Beth David notes that Shalom Corner “embraces Jewish values and culture along with celebrating a multicultural world,” and adds that children from all backgrounds are welcome to join.
In an application filed with Westwood’s Planning Board earlier this year, Encounter Church (Encounter), located at 18 Southwest Park in Westwood, described its plans to build a playground addition of roughly 2,000 square feet at the back of its building for a preschool. Encounter’s application notes that the preschool for children aged 3 to 5 would run Monday through Friday, and the church plans a “launch” in September this year. Encounter’s application states it plans to have a maximum attendance of forty children, 6 teachers, and 1 director. Encounter’s application describes enrollment in 2 classes, with twenty children with 3 educators in each classroom.
