Excitement is building around Westwood High School’s newest boys sport – volleyball. The inaugural season saw the team finish with a record of 6 wins and 12 losses.
“In our first official year as a varsity program, the Wolverines showed impressive growth, staying in postseason contention right up until the final week of the season,” said Coach Nathan Costello. “Much of the credit goes to the team’s 10 senior leaders, whose dedication and passion helped guide the program’s transition from last year’s club team to a competitive force on the court. “
The boys program also garnered enough interest to field a full junior varsity team this year.
“The commitment of our upperclassmen laid a strong foundation for the underclassmen, setting the tone for a program with big ambitions and even bigger potential, "said Costello.
Boys’ volleyball is on the rise not only in Westwood, but in the Northeast part of the country. Costello said the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association expects 150 high schools to field teams next year.
