Rising Westwood sixth-grader Grace Li recently received a visit at her home from Westwood Public Schools Superintendent Timothy Piwowar, Instructional Technology Coach Mark Goguen and fifth grade teacher Jared Jones. The team was on hand to congratulate the student who captured first place in the national InvestWrite Competition. Li’s winning essay was titled, “How the SMG Trained Me for the Future.”

Rising sixth grader Grace Li displays her trophy, medal, and certifcate that she received upon learning that she captured first place in the Massachusetts Elementary Spring InvestWrite Competition.SMG refers to the Stock Market Game, a financial literacy program sponsored by the SIFMA Foundation and offered to public schools across the country. “Westwood has taken part in the Stock Market Game and related InvestWrite essay competition for years now,” said Goguen. “Here in Westwood, we believe it’s important to enhance our student’s knowledge of finances and the stock market. We believe that our students’ success in these competitions over the years is indicative not only of a strong curriculum, but also their potential for financial literacy and success long after graduation.”
Li’s essay touched on her dreams for the future and how the stock market might help her to achieve those goals. In addition to a trophy and medal, Li received a $100 gift card and a banner commemorating her win that is now hanging at Pine Hill.
“Grace was very determined to succeed,” said Goguen. “She participated in the fall and spring contests which proved she was not to be discouraged.”
