The news described in this installment of Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Detective Lieutenant Christopher Aylward and police staff to Westwood Minute through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may incorporate facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.
Identity Theft for Credit Cards and Loans
11:41 a.m. A couple residing on Fox Meadow Drive reported receiving letters from two different banks regarding credit cards and personal loans that had been applied for in their names. The applications were unsuccessful.
Family Dispute
1:48 a.m. Police responded to a home on University Avenue at the request of the homeowner who wanted assistance in asking family members to leave after a disagreement and their refusal to do so. The resident did not have a close relationship with the family members, but had come into contact with them after her mother's recent death. When police arrived, the family members had already left.
A Lost Lyft?
8:51 a.m. A resident of Far Reach Road complained that a stranger was observed driving a car all the way up the resident’s long driveway, getting out, looking around and leaving. Police traced the vehicle to a ride-sharing company. The driver is believed to have arrived at a mistaken address.
Noise Complaint on Fisher Street
9:36 a.m. Police received a call regarding backyard music on Fisher Street that reportedly was causing a disturbance. An officer responded to the residence and spoke to the occupants. At the time, police observed the street was quiet.
Noise Complaint on Fisher Street, Again
10:02 a.m. Police received a second call regarding loud music from the backyard of a home on Fisher Street. Police responded a second time and explained Westwood’s noise bylaw.
WhatsApp Acquaintance Attempts Blackmail
10:12 a.m. A resident of Lull Street reported an attempted blackmail by an acquaintance through the WhatsApp. The acquaintance reportedly threatened to expose the resident unless $2,000 was sent.
Late Night Argument Causes Disturbance
10:30 p.m. Police received a report of yelling coming from the area of Buckmaster Pond. Police responded to the pond and encountered several teenagers from another town who were in the Buckmaster Pond parking lot. One was in the midst of an argument on the phone. The teens were sent on their way.
Testing Door Handles on Dealership's Parked Cars
10:56 p.m. A security company for the Porsche dealership on Providence Highway contacted police after observing a person walking through the dealership lot, pulling on vehicle door handles. The suspect was gone when police arrived.
Rocks Thrown at Moving Car in Road Rage Incident
2:38 p.m. A resident of Taunton reported a road rage incident on University Avenue, alleging that while driving on the road, rocks were thrown at his car by the occupant(s) of another moving vehicle. The car was described first as a blue sedan with Rhode Island plates, but then also described as a silver vehicle with no plate given.
Finding a Place to Smoke
8:22 p.m. Police received a report that a man was seen on High Street, smoking something with a pipe in a car with the door open. Police found the man smoking an “old school” tobacco pipe while he was using the Wi-Fi from the Starbucks coffee shop. No criminal activity was discovered.
Social Security Number Found on Dark Web
11:19 a.m. A resident of Stanford Drive reported receiving an alert from her bank that informed her that her social security number had been compromised, and found on the dark web. No financial loss was reported.
Suspects Fail to Pay for Large Items in Shopping Cart
4:02 p.m. Police responded to the Target store on University Avenue where store staff reported observing two people paying for cosmetics in the self-checkout line, but allegedly attempting to exit with an unpaid-for Dyson air conditioner and vacuum. The pair were stopped and found with additional unpaid store merchandise in their possession – a Stanley cup and more cosmetics. The total value of items was about $700. The suspects, residents of Boston and Roslindale, were each charged with one count of shoplifting and will be summoned to court.
Search for Missing Boater
4:47 p.m. Westwood Police responded to a request for mutual aid from Stoughton Police to assist with the search for a missing 20-year-old paddler. His kayak or canoe had flipped while on Ames Pond in Stoughton and he had not resurfaced. Westwood Police prepared to deploy a drone, but shortly after responding, were notified that the state police dive team had found the individual and transported him to the hospital. The individual was later pronounced deceased.
Suspect Provides False Identities
5:57 p.m. Police received a call from staff at the Target Store on University Avenue after they witnessed a female concealing merchandise in her bag. She was stopped and questioned, reportedly giving several false names and a false date of birth before finally providing her true identity. The Dorchester resident is believed to have also shoplifted item(s) from Target just a few days prior, but had not been identified. On this second date, she reportedly had taken food, towels, and perfume valued at $66. She was arrested and charged with one count of shoplifting. Additional charges may be added.
Firearm Sighting by Interstate 95 Offramp into Westwood
8:26 p.m. Massachusetts State Police alerted Westwood Police to a call they received regarding a man who reportedly was seen holding what appeared to be a firearm, in the area of the Interstate 95 South off-ramp that connects to Route 109 in Westwood. Both state police and Westwood Police responded to the area. No such person was found.
Irate Instacart Worker
12:46 p.m. Police were summoned to the Michael’s store on University Avenue to assist an employee who was having a verbal dispute with an Instacart delivery person. The employee reported that the Instacart worker had been swearing in the store over the subject of a balloon delivery. Police arrived and sent the worker on his way.
Stranger Trespasses on Resident's Property
5:28 p.m. A resident of Cedar Hill Drive complained that an unknown male had walked through her property. The residence abuts a wooded area, and police note that hikers who become lost sometimes cut through residential properties to exit the woods.
Missing Westwood Man Found by Norwood Police
6:23 p.m. Police received a missing persons report from the family of a Westwood resident. They told police that their brother had not been seen since the previous day and that his bike and car were still at home. Police checked with other law enforcement agencies, but none reported any interaction with him. His cell phone was located in an area with a radius too large to deploy the K9 unit to assist. A drone was deployed but did not find him.
Around 4:00 a.m. the next morning, Norwood Police informed Westwood Police that the man had been found on foot in Norwood, on Nahatan Street. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Man Suspected of Repeat Shoplifting is Identified and Charged
5:59 p.m. Loss prevention staff at the Target store on University Avenue reported observing a male placing approximately $73 worth of protein bars into a personal bag and walking out of the store without paying. Staff reportedly also had video of the same person concealing approximately $200 worth of men’s shirts in a personal bag and leaving the store without paying. The suspect has been identified as a resident of Sharon. He will be charged with two counts of shoplifting.
One Thing Leads to Another
9:35 p.m. An officer performed a random query on the license plate of a passing 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass and discovered that the car’s registration was suspended. Upon making the traffic stop, the officer also discovered that the driver’s license had been suspended since 2018, and that there was a warrant for his arrest from Taunton District Court. The Riverside, Rhode Island resident was arrested on the warrant and charged with driving with a suspended registration and a suspended license.
