Police Log: Shoplifting In-Progress, Assault on a Police Officer, Theft of Garage Doors

Thief steals garage doors

2:26 p.m. A resident of Hartford Street, whose house is being renovated, reported theft of two garage doors and a garage door opener. The doors have an estimated value of $2,000.  The door opener and garage door hardware are estimated to be worth $250.

Unwelcome follower

5:08 p.m. A woman from Canton told police that she was shopping in Wegmans on Sunday, January 23rd, when she was approached by a younger, 25 to 30 year-old man who complimented her appearance and seemed to be following her around the store. She confronted him about following her, and he claimed not to know what she was talking about. 

The woman reported the incident to the store manager. On January 24th, the store informed her that it had identified the man as an employee of a grocery delivery service. Wegmans informed her that it would contact the service to ask that the man be excluded from coming into the store.

$10,000 larceny

5:49 p.m. A married couple residing on Pine Lane explained to police that their bank account had been hacked. On January 21, 2022, a $10,000 transfer was made to a bank in Iowa which they had not authorized. Another transfer of $600, also not authorized by them, was found to have been made to a Capital One credit card on that same date. 

Upon contacting their bank, they were told a third unauthorized transfer was being initiated. They were able to block that transaction. The couple is unsure how the security of their accounts were compromised. 

Detectives are investigating.

Breaking and entering on Far Reach Road

7:09 p.m. Police received a report of a breaking and entering of a home on Far Reach Road. The residents had been away and returned that evening to find the house had been entered. Upon arriving at the residence, police cleared the house, which had been ransacked. Approximately $1,000 worth of personal property had been taken. Detectives followed up with crime scene processing.

Dirty deed

2:15 p.m. A Lake Shore Drive resident reported that dog droppings have been left at the resident’s home on several occasions. The incidents are under investigation.

Ice skating attracts neighborly concern

2:25 p.m. A caller reported two teenagers on the ice at Buckmaster Pond, which the caller believed to be unsafe. Police responded and found two adults ice skating. The ice was firm.

Unemployment fraud

5:56 p.m. A resident of Walker Road reported a case of unemployment fraud. He had become aware of the fraudulent claim and notified his employer and the state Department of Unemployment Assistance. He put a freeze on his credit and set up fraud alerts.

Assault and battery on a police officer

9:34 p.m. Police received a report of an unruly customer at Not Your Average Joe’s restaurant on University Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing the woman, a Stoughton resident, assault another customer. Police arrived to conduct mediation. Police left around 10:00 p.m., when the woman had calmed down and was preparing to be driven home by her husband.

After conducting a neighborhood check, the shift sergeant returned to the location and found the woman in the parking lot with her husband. As police escorted her to her vehicle, the woman flailed and struck an officer. She was placed under arrest and charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. Bail was set at $340 and after 2:05 a.m., she was released.

Gym locker theft 

12:06 a.m. Police reported to Life Time Fitness on Harvard Street where they spoke to a 17 year-old from Canton. The teenager had placed his personal items in a gym locker before working out. Upon returning to his locker, he discovered that his goose down coat, worth $1,400, was missing. His Apple Airpods, worth approximately $250, also were missing. 

The victim of the theft used an application on his phone to locate his Airpods. He and Westwood Police drove separately to meet Dedham police, and traced the location to a small apartment complex of between six to eight units. 

This case is being investigated. Westwood Police will seek internal video from Life Time Fitness.

Stopping a shoplifting in progress

10:46 p.m. Police were called to a shoplifting in progress at Wegmans, where a man and a woman were reported to be putting store items into their personal bags. Police encountered the woman in the parking lot, after she had left the store without paying for her items. The 34 year-old woman from Canton agreed to accompany police back to the store where she was charged with shoplifting. Items in her bag included dryer sheets, soap, nasal spray, bandages, Pepto Bismol and razors, totaling $80.34. 

Police found the man, a 47 year-old from Dedham, inside the store. He did not have store merchandise on him and was not charged.
