Police Log: Pellets fired at Pedestrians, Resident Performs CPR on Accident Victim, Break-Ins and Armed Threats

The news described in Westwood Minute’s Police Log article is primarily based on selected information from the Westwood Police Department’s daily log and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff. Occasionally, a few facts from other sources may be woven into these stories.

Tuesday, April 12th

Break-in on Far Reach Road

12:00 a.m. A resident of Far Reach Road returned home to find evidence of a possible break-in. A police detective immediately responded to the home and confirmed that to be the case. State police crime services dusted for fingerprints. Nothing appears to have been taken, but approximately $500 worth of damage was done to a window. This case is under investigation.

Assistance in Disposal of BB Pellets

3:57 p.m. Police responded to a home on Beechnut Road to assist a resident in disposing of firecrackers and a box of BB pellets that had belonged to the resident’s late husband. The resident had discovered the items while cleaning the house. The responding officer took the items into custody to have them destroyed.

Wednesday, April 13th

Armed Person Making Threats in Dedham

9:46 p.m. A Westwood patrol officer responded to a call for assistance from Dedham Police for assistance in coverage of service calls while a large part of Dedham Police responded to a call regarding a barricaded subject on Sprague Street.

9:59 p.m. A Westwood detective sergeant responded to a call for investigative support from Dedham Police who were dealing with a subject believed to be barricaded. Around 9:20 p.m., Dedham Police had received a call from a resident at 19 Sprague Street in Dedham, reporting that during a dispute, a family member had threatened the caller with a firearm. The caller believed the family member to be in the basement.

Dedham Police responded to the scene and evacuated the caller, his wife, and a child. Due to the seriousness of the situation, Dedham Police requested support from area police departments, including Westwood Police. Traffic was diverted from the area while Dedham Police attempted to make contact with the individual. When no contact was made, police entered the home. They did not find anyone inside. An investigation is ongoing.

Pedestrians shot by pellets

7:47 p.m. Police received a report of two Westwood residents being shot with pellets as they walked along Washington Street. Neither suffered serious injury. The incident happened on the stretch of Washington Street between Fairview and School streets. This incident is under investigation.

Overzealous landscapers

9:08 p.m. A resident of Gables University Station Apartments complained to police about unreasonable noise being made by a crew of landscapers. Although it was night, the crew was using leaf blowers in the area around the apartment building, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, Fidelity Investments and Starbucks. Police spoke to the crew and property manager regarding the noise, and the landscapers reported they would be done shortly.

Thursday, April 14th

Youths having fun cause a disturbance

7:14 p.m. Police received a call from a resident of Sunrise Road who reported kids were running around the neighborhood and playing loud music from a parked vehicle. An officer found a group of young people at the corner of Sunrise and Oriole roads and requested that they keep the music down. They agreed to do so.

Suspicious person on Cobleigh Street/Forest Road

11:12 p.m. A resident in the area of Cobleigh Street and Forest Road reported a suspicious male walking in the neighborhood wearing gloves and a backpack. Two officers responded and checked the area for fifteen minutes. They were unable to locate such a person.

Friday, April 15th

Faulty wireless charger causes fire

12:53 a.m. Police were dispatched to 101 Station Drive, an office building housing Children’s Hospital and other organizations, to respond to a report of an employee who found evidence of fire in her Chevy Silverado pickup truck. She had reported to work at 4 p.m. and left her vehicle in the parking lot. Upon exiting the building at the end of work, she found major damage to her center console and minor damage to the dashboard and ceiling of her vehicle. Police investigated and believe that the wireless charging station that is built into the vehicle’s center console was the cause of the fire. The owner explained that she had purchased the vehicle a month ago but the wireless charger had never worked.

Homeless woman seeks hotel housing

9:31 p.m. The night manager of Courtyard Marriott on University Avenue requested police assistance regarding a woman who was seen wandering about the hotel and believed to be staying in rooms without paying. While an officer was in conversation with the manager in the hotel lobby, the woman herself appeared. The manager told her she was not welcome and she left. She was a 35 year-old homeless woman.

Saturday, April 16th

Harassment by a longtime acquaintance

6:26 p.m. A resident of East Street reported to police that he is being harassed by a longtime male acquaintance who lives in Sagamore Beach. There appears to be a history of harassment, and the same resident had earlier reported an instance of vandalism where his vehicle’s tires were slashed while parked at his home. Police advised the resident regarding how to obtain a Harassment Prevention Order.

Sunday, April 17th

Suspect caught in act of vehicle break-in

12:54 a.m. Police arrived at a Thatcher Street residence to take a report of a break-in. There were several trucks parked at the residence, and a household member witnessed the hazard lights turn on in one truck, a Ford F450 work truck. The resident shined a light in the direction of the truck and saw an individual in the cab. The person in the cab fled on foot, reportedly in the direction of Clapboardtree Street. Nothing appears to have been taken.

Resident performs CPR on seriously injured accident victim

3:08 p.m. Police received a call from a Westwood resident, a nurse, who informed police that she was performing CPR on the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash. Multiple units responded to the accident scene on Ridge Road near Skyline Drive. The driver was also from Westwood. She was seriously injured and transported first to Beth Israel Deaconess Needham, and then to Beth Israel Deaconess Boston. The crash is under investigation. It appears that the vehicle went off the road, striking a cliff face before coming to rest. The vehicle was totaled.
