Police Log: College Students Charged with Felony for Larceny over $1,200 and Other Stories

The news described in Westwood Minute's Police Log article is primarily based on selected information from the Westwood Police Department's daily log and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff. Occasionally, a few facts from other sources may be woven into these stories.

November 13th

College Students Charged with Felony for Larceny over $1,200

6:09 p.m. Police responded to a report of a larceny in progress at Wegmans. Upon arrival, police spoke to asset protection personnel who informed police that four individuals were involved in removing three carts of unpaid merchandise worth $1,375.58 from the store.

Three of the individuals were being detained in the store’s security office. Police spoke with the three, who were able to contact the fourth individual. All four suspects, two adult males and two adult females, were international students from Curry College.

Items taken were a great deal of candy along with meat, shrimp, soda, toiletries, fruit and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, and Red Bull beverages.

The students were apologetic and offered to pay for the items. They were handed trespass notices, and each will be summoned to court on felony charges of larceny over $1,200.


November 12th

Peacemaking at Amtrak Station

7:40 a.m. Police were dispatched to Route 128 Station where an altercation was reported. Police encountered a man from New York City and a man from Hopedale, Massachusetts inside the station. They admitted to having a loud verbal argument outside of the station regarding abuse of some luggage. There was no physical contact between the men. Police calmed the situation and each man went his own way.

Vehicle Airbag Stolen from Hawthorn Street Residence

12:00 p.m. A resident of Hawthorn Street reported that an airbag had been stolen from the steering wheel of the resident’s 2015 Honda CRV overnight, between November 11th to November 12th. Police are conducting inquiries in the neighborhood to see is any surrounding home have footage from security cameras that could be used to identify the perpetrator(s).

Nordstrom Rack Shoplifting Suspect Discovered in Panera Bread after Abandoning Loot

1:54 p.m. Police were summoned to Nordstrom Rack at University Station by store security staff who witnessed a suspect leaving the store with four bags of unpaid merchandise. While police were en route, the suspect, a woman in a purple dress and black shoes, was observed dropping all four bags in front of the Target store. The bags were retrieved by Nordstrom Rack staff.

Police arrived and searched for the suspect first at nearby Chipotle before discovering her at Panera Bread. Police handed the woman, a Norwood resident, a notice of trespass from Nordstrom Rack, and she will be receiving a summons for shoplifting.

Deer Strike at High and Mill Streets

5:10 p.m. A 2015 Jeep Cherokee struck a deer at the intersection of High Street and Mill Street. The driver, a man from Norwood, was driving east toward Dedham when the deer entered High Street, from the direction of Mill Street. The Jeep struck the deer on the head when it tried to retreat, too late. When an officer arrived, the deer was already dead. The driver was uninjured. The collision left the vehicle with a broken headlight and fog light, and a cracked right front bumper. The vehicle was able to be driven away from the scene.



November 11th

Knocking Nuisance

2:09 a.m. A resident of Willow Street reported an ongoing issue of someone knocking on the door of the residence in the early morning hours on a number of occasions. The resident believed that youths in the area were responsible. Police checked but did not find any persons in the area.

Skater Boys

5:03 a.m. Westwood received a call from Norwood Police regarding a complaint to Norwood Police concerning three males in their 20s who were travelling down Winter Street on skateboards. The complainant expressed concern due to the time of day. Westwood Police checked the area but the skate boarders where not to be found.

Unemployment Fraud

3:25 p.m. A resident of Far Reach Road explained that she had been a victim of fraud in the past. Last month, she received mail from a bank regarding unemployment assistance payments for which she had never applied. Along with contacting police, she has notified the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance of the fraudulent claim.


November 10th

Two-Car Collision at Nahatan and Clapboardtree Streets

8:27 a.m. A 2015 Ford truck driven by a man from Dedham was attempting to turn from Nahatan Street onto Clapboardtree Street when it crashed into the driver side of a 2011 Ford operated by a man from Hartford, Connecticut. Neither man was injured. Both vehicles received minor damage and were able to be driven from the scene. No citations were issued.


November 9th

Catalytic Converter Stolen at Norfolk Golf Club

2:03 p.m. Police responded to a report of a stolen catalytic converter at Norfolk Golf Club. A Dedham resident and employee of the club had parked his 2008 Honda CRV near the maintenance garage of the golf course, located close to East Street. The theft occurred sometime between 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on November 9th.

Unsatisfied Customer

6:24 p.m. Police were called to Panda Express by the restaurant due to a verbal altercation between the customer and employee. An employee informed police that upon learning of a problem with an order, and being unable to obtain the number for corporate headquarters from the employee, the customer subsequently threatened to fight the employee.

According to the customer, she had indicated that she did not want to fight over the issue. With police mediating, the customer paid for the food and left. Police informed the customer that she could register her complaint with the eatery’s corporate offices, using a Google search to determine the contact information.


November 8th

8:29 a.m. A 2018 Ford rental vehicle driven by a woman from Nashua, New Hampshire was rear-ended on Washington Street by a 2021 Dodge leased vehicle driven by a man from Providence, Rhode Island. The driver of the Dodge informed police that he had been distracted by his GPS and was unable to apply his brakes in time. Neither party required medical treatment.
