CANTON, MA – Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott announced on Friday, December 23, 2022 that his office has sworn in a new class of seven correctional officers at a graduation ceremony held at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton. Two retiring senior staff were also recognized at the ceremony, as well as recipients of the Norfolk County Hero Award.

“The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office maintains its reputation as one of the best correctional facilities in the Commonwealth and the nation because of the excellence of its staff who undergo a rigorous and thorough training regiment,” Sheriff McDermott said. “This new class promises to add fresh perspectives and strengths to our already top-notch team.”

The NCSO 22-01 Class has officers with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, including published authors, certified mediators, Kempo black belt holders, electrical engineers, college athletes, realtors, and more. These unique skillsets and experiences give officers an invaluable perspective from which to approach their work at the Dedham House of Correction, said Sheriff McDermott.

“Officers don’t leave these experiences at home when they put on their uniforms,” he said. “They take them with them to work and draw inspiration from them as they fulfill their duties as Correctional Officers.”

In addition to their unique backgrounds, this is the first NCSO training class to undergo Mental Health First Aid Certification training, which all NCSO officers will soon be completing.

The new officers who have joined the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office are Ryan Carvalho-Pereira, Jenkins Fenton, Rudy Jerome, Brant McCarron, James McDonough, Derek O’Toole, and Justin Peña.

In addition to swearing in the new officers, Sheriff McDermott also recognized the contributions of two retiring members of the command staff, Assistant Deputy Superintendent Carter Holmes and Assistant Deputy Superintendent Robert Dillon.

Sheriff McDermott also honored the recent recipients of the Norfolk County Hero Award: Adam Taj, of Foxborough, and Judith Foster, of Medfield.
