No Quorum Reduction for Upcoming 2024 Town Meeting in May

Westwood Select Board decided at its last meeting on April 16th to leave the quorum requirement as is for the Monday, May 6, 2024 Town Meeting, at 175 registered voters. The decision departs from what had been a trend in recent years of Select Board reducing the quorum for Westwood's annual Town Meetings.

In the recent past, Select Board members had approved quorum reductions, with special concern during the pandemic, fearing that voters would not turn out so that town business might be impeded. Town officials also had expressed concern that resources expended in preparing for the Town Meeting might be wasted.

This time, however, all three board members found no need for a quorum reduction for the May 6, 2024 Annual Town Meeting. Select Board Chair Marianne LeBlanc Cummings noted there is no need for it. Select Board Clerk noted that the town has never failed to meet its quorum, although it has come close to missing the requirement. Select Board Member Joe Previtera noted, "If it's not broken, don't fix it."
