Since July 4, 2024, Westwood Police Department has been investigating a number of reports from residents of Canton Street who say they have heard gunshots, or they have found evidence of shots being fired.

The latest incident known to Westwood Minute was reported on Sunday, July 14th, when police investigated evidence of a bullet striking a resident’s garage, although the actual date of the shot being fired is believed to have happened about a week earlier.

This past Sunday, an officer responded to a home on Canton Street to examine bullet fragments that were found in a resident’s garage. About a week earlier, the resident had found a hole in their garage door. Thinking nothing of it at the time, the resident simply patched the damaged door. However, the discovery of bullet fragments this week appear to present evidence that it was a bullet that struck the resident’s garage door, causing the hole.

On July 11th, police received a report from a resident of Canton Street that shots were heard around 2:00 a.m. that morning. Upon investigation, police recovered a single, empty cartridge case from the side of road, in the area of the 300 block of Canton Street.

Additionally, Westwood Police received earlier reports from two different Canton Street residents of shots being fired on July 4.

Westwood Police are investigating these incidents. The department declines to comment, during this open investigation, on whether the reports from July 11 and July 4 are related.
