Police Log: Rocks Break Windows, Suspicious Characters, Screaming Woman and Other Stories
The news described in Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may weave a few facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.
Monday, November 11th
Suspicious Man Looking Through Home’s Window
2:05 a.m. Police were dispatched to a home on Cedar Hill Drive on the report of a man looking into the house window. The caller had observed the man walking to Gay Street before calling police. The suspect was described as wearing a light-colored sweatshirt and The resident showed police security footage to corroborate the report. The resident told police that prior to seeing the man on the security camera, the resident heard what sounded like a man and woman speaking. Police found no sign of attempted entry.
Foiled Dine and Dash
9:32 p.m. Police received a complaint from Del Frisco’s Grille on University Avenue where staff reported that a customer was refusing to pay a $83 bill after a meal. A female patron had ordered a dinner of pork chop, lobster mac and cheese, lemonade and coconut cream pie. She told police that she had no identification, and her Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card had been stolen during a ride that day on the Red Line subway train. She said she reported the incident to police. Westwood Police contacted other police departments along the Red Line T route but none were able to confirm the report of such a theft. Upon being asked if anyone could be contacted to pay her bill, the 39 year-old woman from East Falmouth answered in the negative, became verbally abusive and profane. Police arrested the woman on the charge of defrauding an innkeeper. Bail was set at $250, and she was kept in jail overnight until her transfer in the morning to Dedham District Court.
Sunday, November 10th
Social Media Production
12:07 a.m. Police responded to a call from security for the Porsche Westwood car dealership on Providence Highway, which reported a male wearing a blue hoodie, who was walking in the parking lot in the early morning hour. The man, a 23 year-old from Westport, Connecticut, told police he was taking photos of cars to post on social media. Police advised him to be off the premises outside of business hours.
Saturday, November 9th
In Search of a Restroom
2:36 a.m. An officer responded to Del Frisco’s Grille on University Avenue on the report of a man carrying a black backpack, walking around the restaurant building and looking into windows, and entering the building. When police arrived, they saw the suspect exiting the building and walking toward the Courtyard Marriott. The man, a resident of Stoughton, explained that he was seeking a restroom. Staff inside the building were able to confirm the man’s explanation.
Reported Assault Following Road Rage on Providence Highway
1:30 p.m. Police responded to Lamberts’ Plaza on Providence Highway on the report of a fight. An officer arrived and was flagged down by a man in a Red Sox jacket who pointed the officer to a vehicle in the parking lot, indicating that a suspect was in the car. The officer observed another male exit the car and argue with the man in the Red Sox jacket from across the log. Police learned the two men – one from Carver and the other from Whitman in Massachusetts – were involved in a vehicular incident on Route 1, where one accused the other of cutting him off. When they found themselves both parked at the same shopping plaza, an argument and physical altercation ensured. Police separated the men, took statements, and will be reviewing surveillance footage.
Suspected Shoplifter with Infant Referred to DCF
3:21 p.m. At the Target store on University Avenue, police responded to a report of shoplifting. The suspect, a 28 year-old woman from Norwood, was in the store’s asset protection office with an infant in a carriage. Store employees told police they recognized her as a suspect in other shoplifting incidents at Target stores in other locations. The woman asserted that she had forgotten to scan items in this case – a floor mop, children’s shoes, and a mini baby carrier. The store trespassed the woman from all Target locations for one year. A report was made to the Department of Children & Families due to the woman involving a child in the suspected shoplifting incident.
Friday, November 8th
Locked Out
12:06 a.m. Police assisted a resident of Hillview Road who was locked out, and unable to get inside the home. Police were able to wake a resident inside the home who was able to allow the person inside.
Student Suffers Allergic Reaction
2:59 p.m. EMS responded to Downey School on Downey Street where a student was suffering an allergic reaction. The student was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital in the company of a school employee.
Thursday, November 7th
Suspected Breaking and Entering of Pickup Truck
2:47 p.m. A patron of Life Time Fitness on Harvard Street reported the belief that someone had entered his Ford pickup truck while he was working out at the gym. He found a small towel inside the vehicle’s cup holder, but he remembered that it was stored in the center console. Nothing appeared to be taken from the locked car.
Screaming Woman Tries to Collect a Debt
5:32 p.m. Police responded to a home on Alder Road on the report of a woman who was on the front lawn, screaming in the direction of the house. Police identified the woman as a resident of Providence, Rhode Island. She claimed that the resident of Alder Road owed her a significant amount of money. Police urged the woman to leave, and she complied.
Tuesday, November 5th
Rock Thrown Through Car Window
7:30 a.m. An officer responded to a private residence for a report of a rock thrown through a car window. Around 3:30 a.m., the resident reported hearing loud banging, but upon looking outside, saw nothing amiss. Later in the morning, the resident found the driver side front-side window had been broken with a rock and had scratches. There were rocks nearby the vehicle. Nothing was missing from inside the vehicle.
Rock Breaks Window on House
10:32 a.m. A homeowner on Downey Street told police that around 3:20 a.m. that morning, a loud noise was heard in the home. At the time, the residents believed the sounds were made by a pet. Later in the day, the homeowner discovered that a bay window was broken. A large rock that was sitting directly below the window is believed to have been the instrument used to cause the damage.
A resident in the neighborhood of the aforementioned window break on Downey Street reported to police that at 3:15 a.m., he awoke to the sound of talking in the street. He got out of bed and saw a brown or beige sedan, possibly a Camry, parked on Smith Drive. A short time later, he was two teens or young adults walking down Downey Street. A few minutes later, he saw them run back to the vehicle and depart in the sedan.
False Alarm
4:35 p.m. A caller reported that a family member heard someone walking around inside the house on Fox Hill Street. An investigation revealed that another family member was at home, unbeknownst to the complainants.
