Westwood residents will be asked to cast their ballots in the Westwood High School gymnasium at a Special Election on Tuesday, June 3rd, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., where a majority vote is required to move the new Fire Station 1 (FS1) project forward, following residents' approval at Town Meeting on May 19th of $38.1 million in construction costs to fund the new station.
The upcoming vote on June 3rd is for an exemption from Proposition 2 1/2, which is the state law that strictly limits the amount of property tax revenue a municipality can raise through real and personal property taxes. The ballot question asks whether the Town of Westwood should allow a debt exclusion, so that taxes may be imposed to raise funds specifically for FS1, in excess of the levy limit or levy ceiling.
On Tuesday, voters arriving at the polling location of the Westwood High School gymnasium, located at 200 Nahatan Street, will be presented with the following question:
"Shall the Town of Westwood be allowed to exempt from the provisions of proposition two and one-half, so-called, the amounts required to pay for the bonds issued in order to pay costs of constructing, equipping and furnishing a new fire station, including the payment of all costs incidental and related thereto?"
The recent vote at Town Meeting on May 19th authorized $38.1 million in funding for the design and construction of a modern facility to replace the aging FS1 on High Street, which has served the community for over 75 years. The new station is intended to address long-standing issues related to structural integrity, inadequate dormitory space, and mission readiness,
including the safe and efficient deployment of fire and rescue vehicles.
Thanks to the Town of Westwood for sharing its news with Westwood Minute.
