There were two roadway accidents with injuries in Westwood on Friday, May 21, one incident in the morning on Clapboardtree Street and one incident in the afternoon on Nahatan Street. A case of online fraud was also reported.
Just after 8:00 a.m., a 40 year old man was very seriously injured when he attempted to cross Clapboardtree Street near Washington Street, without a crosswalk, and by stepping in front of moving traffic, according to Westwood Police Chief Jeffrey P. Silva. The pedestrian was taken by helicopter to a Boston area hospital.
Westwood and Massachusetts State Police were at the scene. Police closed the area of Clapboardtree Street between Milk and Washington streets to investigate.
Chief Silva notes that speed or distracted driving do not appear to be a factor in the Clapboardtree Street accident. A preliminary investigation indicates that traffic on one side of the road was able to stop and avoid the pedestrian who was jaywalking, but a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction did not see him and struck him.
Later on the same day, at 1:22 p.m., a chain reaction accident involving 3 vehicles occurred on Nahatan Street in front of the driveway of Westwood High School. The vehicles were traveling on the road when the first car slowed. The third, rearmost car hit the second, middle car. The second car went into a streetlamp and also struck the first car.
The driver of the rearmost car was a 54 year old woman who was taken to Good Samaritan hospital in Brockton. Her car sustained heavy front damage and was towed.
The car that was rear-ended first was driven by a 16 year old female who did not report any injuries to be treated. Her car sustained moderate damage and was towed.
The second car which was struck in the chain reaction was driven by a 50 year old woman who did not report any injuries to be treated. She was able to drive away from the scene with only minor damage to her car.
Also on Friday, a resident on Carroll Avenue came into the Westwood Police station to report a case of fraud on eBay. Police determined that the resident had received a phishing email and the resident was advised not to respond to such emails. The resident affirmed that no answer was made.
