To reduce exposure to mosquito bites, public health officials recommend:

  • Avoid being outdoors between dusk to dawn;
  • Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and socks when outdoors;
  • Use an insect repellent with DEET, permethrin, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus, taking care to use reduced potency (as directed by label) on children;
  • Repair holes in window screens to keep mosquitos from entering homes;
  • Remove standing water from around the home.
