Police Log: Westwood PD Foils Possible "Street Takeover," Juvenile Arrested for Stalking and Other Stories

The news described in this installment of Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Lieutenant Michael DiLalla and police staff to Westwood Minute through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may weave facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.

Sunday, October 19th

Assisting Foxborough Police with an Arrest

12:00 a.m. Westwood Police received a call from Foxborough Police regarding probable cause to arrest a Westwood resident for a domestic incident involving an alleged battery in Foxborough. Westwood Police made the arrest. Foxborough Police took custody of the arrestee.

Saturday, October 18th

Aggressive Dog Breaks Restraint, Bites Vet Clinic Worker

4:58 p.m. Police took a report of a dog bite that occurred at the Lambert’s shopping plaza on Providence Highway. The victim was leaving work from a vet services clinic along with her dog, a lab mix, and was reportedly nervous upon observing that the owner of another store in the plaza was leaving his store with his pit bull. The victim reported that the pit bull was a patient of her clinic, and known to be aggressive.

The police log indicates that the pit bull pulled away from its owner, broke the leash, sprinted to the victim’s lab mix, and attacked. The victim’s dog received a superficial wound but the victim received significant injuries on her left forearm.

The pit bull’s owner regained control of his dog and the victim returned to her clinic for bandages and to secure her dog.

The pit bull’s owner drove the victim to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham for medical attention where the victim received 27 stitches to her arm.

The pit bull has been quarantined in Needham where it resides with its owner. Westwood’s animal control officer has been notified of the incident.

Online Kitten Sale Scam

8:47 p.m. A resident reported a suspected online scam in which kittens are offered for sale. The resident had communicated with another person on Facebook to obtain a specific type of kitten. Over the course of one month, the resident sent a total of about $140 to cover various costs of purchasing the kitten, including a down payment through the online app, Chime. In the middle of September, the correspondence ended, as the seller had blocked the resident. The resident believes the transaction was a scam. Detectives are investigating.

Police Believed to Have Thwarted Plans for Vehicle Takeover of University Station

9:33 p.m. Westwood police received an alert from Massachusetts State Police regarding a social media post containing information that a large group of vehicles planned to arrive shortly at University Station. Westwood Police were were positioned at the shopping center ahead of time when an estimated 30 vehicles arrived according to plans in the social media post. Upon encountering police, the vehicles continued elsewhere.

Friday, October 17th

Juvenile Reported Missing is Arrested for Stalking and Other Crimes

6:45 a.m. Police responded to a missing persons report involving a male juvenile, who had at one time in the past been a student in Westwood Public Schools. Police located the juvenile, who is currently enrolled out of district.

While speaking with both the juvenile and his parents, police received a report from Westwood High School that several handwritten posters had been taped to school property, including its front door. Six posters reportedly contained hostile messages with expletives directed to school staff and to a particular female juvenile. Two additional posters contained threats made directly to the juvenile female.

Police identified the male juvenile as the suspect responsible for the posters. Police charged the youth with stalking, trespassing, vandalism, and making threats to commit crimes. He was arrested and transported to Norfolk County Juvenile Court in Dedham.

Strange Harassment

9:38 p.m. A resident of East Street complained of harassment on the phone from an unknown person. The resident told police that he received phone calls that night during which the caller sang Christmas songs and said, “I’m going to get you.” The resident believes that the caller is a former friend with whom he fell out of touch after they both had a relationship with the same female. The resident blamed that ex-friend for a car fire and vandalism in 2020 and 2023. Police were not able to locate the ex-friend as described.

Thursday, October 16th

Suspicious of Landlord

11:47 a.m. Police spoke with a resident of Grafton Avenue who complained of her belief that her landlord had secretly installed a camera in her apartment. She reported doing laundry in the basement, and using the clothes dryer. A few minutes later, her landlord texted her, informing her that the dryer was broken. She took the timing of the text to mean that the landlord was able to see that she was using the dryer.

Police contacted the landlord, who told police that timing of the text with the tenant using the dryer was a coincidence. Police did not locate any camera in the laundry room.

Shoplifting Leads to Arrest on Drug Charges

1:39 p.m. Police responded to the CVS store on Washington where a manager reported that a woman had placed merchandise in her purse and was leaving in a white Chevrolet Traverse. An officer stopped the vehicle in the store’s parking lot. Upon confronting the driver, the officer received permission to look in the suspect’s purse.

In the suspect’s purse, the officer found merchandise from CVS worth just under $72. Also in her purse was a jar with two white pills, two brown pills, and a crystal-like substance. Police determined that the white pills were 600 mg of Gabapentin, the brown pills were diet pills, and the crystal substance was 4 grams of crystal methamphetamine. She did not have a prescription for the drugs.

The 43 year-old resident of Norwood was arrested and charged with shoplifting, possession of Class A and Class E controlled substances. Additionally, because the suspect had brought along her 16 year-old daughter, police also filed a 51A report for suspected child abuse or neglect.

Wednesday, October 15th

Reminiscing, Not Plotting

7:19 a.m. Police received a call from staff at Sheehan School on Pond Street, who out of abundance of caution, reported seeing a man taking photos of the school. He was described as wearing a white dress shirt, dark tie, dark pants, and departing in a black BMW convertible. A license plate was provided, and police discovered that the vehicle was registered to a business in Natick. Upon investigation, police learned that the driver of the vehicle was in town for a funeral and wanted to visit places from his childhood. He had grown up in Westwood and had attended Sheehan School.

Caught Switching Price Tags

7:13 p.m. Police responded to the Target store on University Avenue where store staff reported that a suspect, known to police as being involved in past shoplifting incident(s), was caught switching the $30 price tag on a sweater with the $20 tag belonging to another item. The Norwood resident was arrested and a no trespass order was issued. The suspect was charged with one count of shoplifting, and additional counts for previous incidents are expected to be added to his charges.

Monday, October 13th

Car Is Being Repossessed, Not Stolen

11:04 a.m. Police received a complaint from a resident of Strasser Avene regarding the attempt by a repossession company to take a pickup truck owned by the resident. The resident reportedly informed the tow truck driver that the driver was not permitted to take the vehicle from private property. After an argument, the pickup was removed from the back of the tow truck and returned to the driveway. Police investigated and learned that it appeared there was valid reason to support the repossession action. The matter has been deemed to be civil, and not criminal in nature.
