10:02 a.m. Police responded to the area of the School and Washington streets intersection where a white, Audi Q5 had collided with a second vehicle. The elderly driver of the Audi, a resident of South Dartmouth, had missed a turn from School Street into the CVS store parking lot, and chose to park on the opposite side of the street, across from CVS, in a parking space. In attempting a U-turn from that position into the CVS parking lot, the Audi struck a passing vehicle which was traveling slowly through the intersection on School Street. The elderly driver reportedly panicked and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. The driver of the stricken vehicle, a Walpole resident, was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Suspected Shoplifter Threatens to Call Police on Driver Parked in a Handicapped Spot

11:43 a.m. Police met with the victim of vandalism, whose car is suspected to have been keyed by a female shoplifting suspect as she left her handicapped parking space outside the Wegmans supermarket on University Avenue.

The Raynham resident reported parking his red, Mini Cooper in a handicapped area outside of Wegmans. His car displayed a handicapped placard. When he returned to his car, he found damage to the car and a note complaining about how he had parked in an area reserved for accessibility for handicapped vans. The note writer threatened that police would be summoned.

Police reviewed video footage of the area and observed a woman in a motorized cart drive around the victim’s car many times, drive away in her car, and then return to write a note while inside her car. A note is then observed on the victim’s car.

Police suspect the same woman of shoplifting wine and cake from Wegmans. She is being charged with shoplifting for the $60 theft and vandalism.

Rental Scam Results in Reports of Stolen Vehicles

5:37 p.m. Westwood Police took reports from several people who all complained of stolen vehicles from what appears to be a scam. The victims told police that they made verbal agreements with someone named “David” who allegedly would operate a car rental business for the victims by renting out their own, purchased cars in Texas.

Three victims all purchased vehicles from a Mercedes-Benz dealership on Providence Highway in Westwood and, as instructed, had the cars shipped to Texas. They believed that "David" would rent the cars and send them proceeds from the rentals. However, the victims had tracking devices which located the cars in Dorchester, not Texas.

Similarly on December 23rd, a couple reported a scam in which they purchased two Mercedes-Benz vehicles and shipped them to Texas to a “David,” who promised to rent out the vehicles and send the couple proceeds from the transaction. They tell police that they have not heard from their alleged business partner since. One vehicle, a 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-350 was purchased from the Westwood Mercedes-Benz dealership at about $80,000. The second vehicle was purchased in Dedham.

Police report at least five different victims of this apparent scam. They are from Taunton, Stoughton, and Brockton.

Police have identified a suspect, who is under investigation.

Fraudster Hacks into Email to Divert Victim’s Payments to Business Vendor

2:09 p.m. An employee of the McMackin Corporation on Perwal Street reported a suspected larceny. The employee reported receiving an email from a business vendor, requesting that the McMackin employee re-route the vendor’s payment to a different account. The McMackin Corporation subsequently sent two payments totaling about $60,000 to the new account. However, the company was later contacted by the business vendor who claimed not to have received the last two payments.

The McMackin employee noted that the original bank for payment deposit had been located in Texas, and the new account was located in New Jersey. The employee believed someone hacked into the business vendor’s account and impersonated the vendor.

Caregiver Suspected to Stealing Jewelry

3:45 p.m. Police met with complainant whose mother is a 96-year-old living at Fox Hill Village. The Complainant visits her mother frequently, and started noticing different pieces of jewelry were missing on a number of visits.

On November 25th, she noticed two rings were missing from her mother’s counter – a gold ring with diamond inlay and a ruby and diamond ring. Each ring is estimated to be worth $1,500.

On a later visit, the complainant noticed additional jewelry worth a total of about $1,850 was missing. They were rings made of pearl, lapis, and gold. The complainant replaced the missing jewelry with costume jewelry worth $100.

On a December 2nd visit, the complainant noticed the costume jewelry was missing. The complainant suspects a caregiver may be involved, as the person with the most frequent access to her mother’s belongings. This case is under investigation.

Hit and Run

6:39 p.m. A Walpole resident reported that she was in her Kia Telluride, stopped at the intersection of Clapboardtree and Nahatan streets, when a truck passed in the opposite direction, sideswiping her car. It appears that a loose tire fell away from the truck bed, and scraped the complainant’s car, causing scuff marks and minor damage. No injuries were reported.
