The man who was captured by surveillance video taking a large number of batteries worth over one thousand dollars from a display at Westwood's Wegmans in late May this year appears to have been apprehended.  Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy of Westwood Police stated that on June 26, 2021, Northampton Police arrested a suspect after an attempted theft of batteries.

"There are several towns across (mostly western) Massachusetts where these battery thefts have occurred and surveillance photos appear to show the same individual as was involved in the Wegmans theft," says Lt. Sheehy.

Recently, a Westwood Police Department detective joined an informational meeting regarding the thefts with detectives from the western part of the state.

"Based on information gleaned from the Northampton PD arrest, Westwood PD is going to charge this individual with Larceny over $1200 and he will be summoned into court," said Lt. Sheehy.

Westwood Minute earlier reported that at 6:22 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2021, a loss prevention representative from Wegmans in University Station reported a theft from the store that occurred on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. The report to Westwood Police indicated that Wegmans surveillance cameras caught a white male taking a large number of batteries from the store’s battery display.

The individual took about 100 packs of AA, AAA, 9-volt and lithium 123 batteries and placed them in a reusable shopping bag, exited the store to the parking lot, and entered a dark colored sedan. Wegmans reports that $1,253.70 worth of batteries were stolen.
