After two years of preparing its newest Charles River Valley reservation to be opened to the public in 20 years, The Trustees will host a celebration at Millborn Farm in Sherborn and Millis on Saturday, June 20, marking the property's “Grand Opening” with an afternoon of free, all-ages family fun.
With a firm start time of no earlier than 1:00 p.m. to allow the Trustees time for final preparations, the celebratory event continues until 4:00 p.m. It will include nature-inspired activities such as beginner birding walks, “Ask the Arborist” tree tours, tree climbing demonstrations, ornamental pruning advice, a kids' tree climb with the Massachusetts Arborists Association, horses and hounds from the Norfolk Hunt Club, a family scavenger hunt, an animal craft for children, an iNaturalist Bioblitz, touch-a-tractor, and more. Complimentary light refreshments will be provided for the first 200 visitors.
Rich with history and unique ecological features, Millborn Farm is a 195-acre reservation that includes trails, fields, forests, farm buildings, and access to the Charles River. It includes acres of open landscape crisscrossed by stonewall-lined hay fields, forestland, farm lanes, and more than a mile of waterfront along the Charles River, Bogastow Brook, and South End Pond. The farm contains 75 acres of productive hay fields and grasslands that support native pollinators, plants, and wildlife. One hundred and thirty-nine species of birds have been documented at Millborn Farm, and it is believed that as many as 50 more species frequent the property.
The Trustees acquired Millborn Farm in 2024, with the help of a $750,000 grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. The acquisition of Millborn Farm makes possible a “water trail” on Trustees land, with navigable water of the Charles River connecting Millborn Farm with nine other Trustees reservations.
Trustees regional vice president-MetroWest, D.A. Hayden, noted that a broad cross-section of supporters helped the Trustees' effort to acquire and open Millborn Farm to the public, from private donors to government officials, neighbors, consultants, and contractors.
“Everyone who touches Millborn Farm is captivated by its beauty and immediately understands the importance of protecting this special place for everyone, forever. It truly took a village to get us from purchase to opening day and we are excited to share the magic of Millborn Farm with the public,” said Hayden.
