Dear Readers,
Because the subject of diversity, equity and inclusion has become a highly charged issue for some in the community, and in response to some concern I have sensed from readers which may represent a wider concern, I wanted to take a moment to share Westwood Minute's policy regarding publishing content on this site.
As editor of Westwood Minute, my goal is to provide a community platform where any community member feels safe to express themselves, and any opinion they may have, on any topic appropriate to print, in a respectful way. Westwood Minute has by now published a number of articles on diversity, equity and inclusion, including two articles regarding the fact that over one thousand signatures have been gathered in support of DEI efforts in town. I believe covering another perspective on the implementation of those diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in our community is fair.
I hope Westwood Minute can be a place where many different viewpoints can be expressed, and not just viewpoints that I personally or certain segments of our community hold. My editorial goal is not to push my own or anyone else's personal agenda, but to allow discussion on topics important to our community to proceed in a respectful way. I trust that as individuals, we are capable and free to make our own choices, given accurate information.
In a divisive time, Westwood Minute seeks to provide the community we all love with a place to respectfully discuss differences of opinion, to share corrections if needed, and to hear what our neighbors have to say.
I very much appreciate your readership. Thanks to all who are willing to engage in a community discussion, and thanks to all who recognize that different pairs of eyes looking at the same set of facts can come to different conclusions and opinions. I hope providing a platform for enabling open and civil discussion on this and other topics may help make our town an even better place to live.
Thanks and best,
Darlene
