Westwood Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Westwood Community Chest and Westwood Council on Aging joined forces on Sunday, May 1, 2020 to provide a facility and location (the Senior Center), a cause, and many willing hands, to participate in Service Day.
The event was coordinated by Westwood resident Aketa Narang Kapur. Ms. Kapur is a Girl Scout parent volunteer and Westwood Community Chest Board Member.
It was an opportunity for the town's youth to assist those in need of cheer and support. The weather cooperated with the planned outdoor activities, giving the volunteers a sunny day with a bright blue sky.
Members of the middle school Boy Scouts organized a car wash, raising about $500 in donations from community members who stopped by their service project. The funds will be donated to Westwood Community Chest, an almost entirely volunteer run non-profit that assists Westwood residents experiencing financial hardship with limited, short-term grants that can help fund items such as groceries, rent, utility bills, and even summer camp awards.
The Girl Scouts painted kindness rocks with happy, caring messages to decorate the Senior Center outdoors. Participants also collected craft kits to distribute to children in homeless shelters.
As a collection, the colorful rocks are eye-catching, and may help brighten someone's day.
Thanks to Ms. Aketa Narang Kapur and Ms. Lina Arena-DeRosa for sharing this news with Westwood Minute.
