I am curious to understand what the “no” vote camp’s target budget would be for the project, as well as how that would be offset by the costs of starting the study and design over. I understand that folks are concerned about the cost, but what cost would you deem acceptable? As someone with 25 years of experience in construction including the design and construction of many public projects, I don’t see how the numbers would work out. I would hope that the community members who are encouraging “no” votes have a solid cost basis to back them up.
Westwood FS1: Vote No So We Can Get It Done Right
As a resident, I understand the need to get a new FS1 station. At the same time, the proposal before us against a backdrop of unfavorable economic conditions and prior overrides should drive us down a more practical path.
An article published in the Boston Globe by Larry Edelman confirms our state as being in a “high risk of a contraction” and we need to watch our budgets. Moreover, we are already paying an extra $600 per year on average for prior overrides being the Library and Pine Hill (source Town of Westwood Override Information).
Where I’m going with this is simple. First, take advantage of the underutilized Fire Station 2 which has 3 bays. Second, build a new FS1 with 4 bays. Also, look at separating the firefighter’s quarters from training and administration so they can get some rest. Third, if the location doesn’t work find a new one. There are some steep grades on the current location that people are talking about. If we are going to build something generational, find the right location.
Why are we being pushed into a $70 million dollar solution that we have already voted down? I hope not just because a contract is already in place to do the stated work for that price. We can get something done for far less and still allow the fire department to continue their mission of protecting life and property. Consider voting no, again, please so we can get going down a better resolution for us all.

The vote “no” people illegally placed flyers in mail boxes around town. I wouldn’t side with those who violate federal law so easily. That said, the vote no succeeded and we will now learn how much that will cost. More? Less? Timer will tell. Who benefits from the no outcome? All of us or a few such as those on the design end who now have to be paid for more work. Just wondering.
