Most marathon runners have a special reason for lacing up and completing 26.2 miles. For Westwood resident and School Committee member Anthony (Tony) Mullin, the reason is deeply personal: his daughter Katie.
“She was a patient at Boston Children’s Hospital when she was 9-years-old,” said Mullin. “This is a good way to give back," he said.
Mullin has already run the Boston Marathon twice and raised over $40,000 for Boston’s renowned pediatric center. In September, he’ll head to Germany to run for the hospital team in the BMW-Berlin marathon, which is one of the world’s largest with over 54,000 runners.
At the time of this article's publication, Mullin's fundraising page at Boston Children's Hospital Giving showed he was about half-way to reaching his goal of a little over $12,000.
“Children’s has world-renowned doctors. Sometimes, we take it for granted,” said Mullin. “There are people who come from all over the world. I support their mission of not only healing the child physically, but also supporting their emotional side.”
Before running for Children’s Hospital, Mullin said he never considered himself an avid runner, but he’s grown to love the marathon experience. He said he expects to finish Berlin in less than four-and-a-half hours.

Tony Mullin enjoys the energy from marathon crowds and the feeling of accomplishment from participating in marathon events.“I love the energy you get from the crowds,” said Mullin. “I was never the fastest runner, but the last time I ran Boston I got such an energy and a thrill from the crowds. You put your name on your bib and people call your name and cheer for you along the route. I learned to just enjoy it, because it’s such an accomplishment.”
He credits his fundraising accomplishments to the incredible support of colleagues, family and friends.
“I’m always amazed at the people who give,” said Mullin. “It’s always really humbling. “[Boston Children’s] is an amazing place and I’m very thankful for the support.”
