WESTWOOD, MA - Swimmer William Mulgrew, a Walpole resident and sophomore at Xaverian Brothers High School, has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 1500 meter freestyle. His personal best performance at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo, CA over the weekend clocked in at 15:36.10. The qualifying time for the Olympic Trials is 15:39:89.
William says he entered the pool at Mission Viejo focused on qualifying for USA Swimming Nationals, so when his hand touched the wall, he immediately looked to the board to see if he met the qualifying time. But before he could find his name, he heard the announcer say his 15:36 time and knew instantly that not only had he qualified for Nationals, he'd made it to the Olympic Trials.
As a swimmer with Crimson Aquatics in Wellesley, William has been competing since age seven. He is the son of Suzanne and Kevin Mulgrew, both NCAA Division 1 swimmers for Miami University in Ohio.
In addition to his training with Crimson Aquatics, William also competes in the Xaverian Hawks swim program. He was named a Boston Globe All Scholastic this winter for his performance on Xaverian's Division 1 swim team. He was also a Catholic Conference All Star and the League Meet MVP.
At the Massachusetts State Meet, William helped the Hawks to a 2nd place finish in the 200 medley relay and a 4th place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. William also took 2nd in the 500 free and 3rd in the 200 free. He continues to train for Nationals which will take place in Indianapolis this summer, and looks forward to the Olympic Trials in June 2024.
