Dedham, MA –  Dedham-Westwood Water District launched its Water Service Line Inventory Project in late September, and is now asking for customers' assistance in identifying the material used in their service lines.

The District mailed postcards to customers whose water service line material is unknown. Postcards include information on how to locate, identify, and submit your water service line material.

“The District’s water system comprises over 13,000 service line connections and 210 miles of water main,” said Executive Director Blake Lukis. “With the large amount of service line connections the District has, creating this inventory is an extensive task. We need all our customers to help make this project successful by locating, identifying, and submitting their water service line material," he said.

The District requests that customers submit all service line information online by November 30, 2023.

The project is being conducted to comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) regulatory requirements.

The EPA announced the LCRR in December 2021 to better protect communities from exposure to lead in drinking water. The revised rule will require public water suppliers to create a lead service line inventory and replacement schedule by October 2024. In addition, sampling protocols have changed to better meet the science behind how lead and copper enter the water, and there are increased sampling requirements for schools and daycare facilities, which were previously not included in sampling programs.

The District’s Water Service Line Inventory Project is being completed with a State Revolving Fund Grant (SRF) that was awarded to the District in August from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and Massachusetts Clean Water Trust (the Trust).
