Police Log: Porch Pirate, Hit-and-Run and Other Stories

The news described in Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Lieutenant Michael DiLalla and police staff through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may weave a few facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.

Monday, February 3rd

Porch Pirate Strikes on Lancaster Drive

10:39 a.m. Police received a report of a package theft that had occurred on January 28, sometime between late morning to late afternoon. The expected package contained pet supplies worth $160, delivered by FedEx, to a home on Lancaster Drive. The package was known to be delivered at 10:30 a.m. but when the resident arrived at home around 3:00 p.m., the package was missing.

Sunday, February 2nd

Hit-and-Run

9:29 a.m. Police received a report of a hit-and-run collision from the previous night, in the area of Washington Street and Clapboardtree Street. The complainant was stopped at the light at Washington Street when the complainant’s vehicle was struck by a dark SUV. The complainant’s vehicle received damage to the front fender and driver’s side quarter panel. No injuries were reported.

Theft of Children’s Shoes

6:27 p.m. Loss prevention staff from Nordstrom Rack on University Station reported observing two females concealing many pairs of children’s shoes in a reusable shopping bag. The particular shoes that they chose did not have security tags on them. They left without paying, taking merchandise worth a total of about $219.

Saturday, February 1st

Suspicious Vehicle

3:01 p.m. Police received a call regarding a suspicious vehicle on Alder Road which had its hazard lights activated for an hour. The vehicle was filled with cardboard boxes. Police learned that the vehicle belonged to a Dell computer employee who was performing a service call.

Friday, January 31st

Domestic Dispute

9:02 p.m. Police responded to a domestic disturbance in Westwood regarding a family dispute over an ongoing probate issue.

Thursday, January 30th

Driving on a Suspended License

4:00 p.m. An officer conducting stationary traffic enforcement near Morrison Park noted a grey RAV 4 pass by, registered to an owner with a suspended license. Upon making the traffic stop, the driver, who was also the owner, stated he was not aware of his license suspension. He was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license.

Wednesday, January 29th

Suspect Conceals Items in Reusable Shopping Bag

5:30 p.m. An officer was summoned to the Target store on University Avenue where store staff observed a man concealing items in a Target bag while shopping in the store. Staff closely watched the man, who was known to have shoplifted in the past from the same store. Staff observed the suspect placing the Target bag with store merchandise into a shopping cart, and additionally take items off shelves and place them into his pockets. Upon confrontation, the suspect stated he was unaware of a prohibition against placing items in shopping bags. The total merchandise which staff believe the man was attempting to shoplift was worth over $400. Additionally, in a pat-down, two gift cards from Target worth $200 were found on his person. The suspect, a man from Canton, was trespassed from the store for one year.

Tuesday, January 28th

One Thing Leads to Another

5:54 p.m. While conducting stationary traffic enforcement, an officer observed a red Chrysler Pacifica traveling at 50 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. zone on Washington Street near the Roche Bros supermarket. The officer made a traffic stop at the intersection of Washington Street and Clapboardtree Street, and spoke to the operator, a delivery truck driver for Edible Arrangements. The officer discovered that the driver, a man from Hyde Park, had an active warrant for his arrest from Brookline District Court for violation of an abuse prevention order. The man was cited for speeding and arrested on the warrant. He was held without bail.

Monday, January 27th

Suspicious Activity on Bank Account

10:50 a.m. A resident of Colburn Street reported an unauthorized inquiry regarding the resident’s bank account. No loss of funds was reported.
