Witches, giants and mermaids take center stage in the musical “Big Fish,” created in the imagination of the show’s protagonist, traveling salesman Edward Bloom. Bloom is prone to telling tall tales – stories his son Will tries to unravel as Edward nears the end of his life.
The WestwoodStage is bringing “Big Fish” to the High School stage March 12, 13 and 14. More than 50 students make up the cast and crew, under the guidance of longtime director Jim Howard.
“Choosing ‘Big Fish’ for our musical was a deliberate leap of faith,” said Howard. “We wanted a story that challenged our students to explore the blurry line between myth and reality. Additionally, we wanted a show that required as much heart as it did technical ambition. While this may not be a show many know, I think they will leave having found a new show to love.”
Helping to bring this magical tale to life are Music Director Rob Goldman, Choreographer Jen Walsh, as well as Lighting Designer, WHS senior Hank Murray,
“From the sweeping choreography to the quiet, grounded moments of familial reconciliation, these students have navigated the emotional complexities of Edward Bloom’s life with great maturity and grace.” said Howard. “They have learned how to tell a tall tale with touching sincerity. I am incredibly proud of the way this company has built this world from the ground up, proving that when we dream big, we live bigger.”
